Analysis of these data shows that count rates are lower at the beginning of an orbit (and particularly on the first orbit) and rise somewhat through out the orbit. This limits the sensitivity of this type of observation. The cause of this phenomenon is most likely traps which are not filled at the beginning of the orbit and the filling of these traps subtracts from the signal. This proposal explores the feasibility of two methods of filling the traps, which if successful should mitigate these problems. Depending on the success of the tests, these methods might become part ot the standard way for carying out transit observations. OBSERVING DESCRIPTION This program contains two types of tests intended to fill traps prior to or between transit observations. What is observed is that count rates from a star which is thought to be stable rise during and orbit. This is undoubtedly due to empty traps that are being filled by shource counts in the very short exposures of a transit observations. Visits labelled Tungsten use the tungsten lamp to attempt to fill the traps prior to an observation. The Tungsten lamp is turned on before the exposure, and during what would be occultaion periods. Special commanding is used to turn the lamp off at a specific fluence level. Visits labeleed Source use the source itself in an attempt to keep the traps filled between visits. They do not attempt to address the problem in the first orbit, but to reduce it in subsequent orbits. Except for the special procedures associated with keeping charge on the detector, the exposure sequences are similar to those of standard transit observations, which usually begin with a short observation to pin down the zero point, and a bunch of scans (alternating in the forward and reverse direction). For the Tungsten observations, we simply place Tungsten lamp exposures before the first observation and betwen observations. For the Source observations, the last expsosure of the sequence has been modified to be a long multiline scan. The scan rate is the same as for the normal scans. Special commanding will be used to put the blank in place at the appropriate time. The timing for this is critical. CALIBRATION JUSTIFICATION 2 Proposal 13573 (STScI Edit Number: 13, Created: Monday, February 10, 2014 9:42:30 PM EST) - Overview Our ability to use HST to measure exoplanet transits is limited by systematics. One of the more obvious instrumental effects is due to traps that are unfilled at the begining of observations of the type used used to measure transits. Measure fluxes are low by about 1% at the beginning of the first orbit in such visits. Smaller drops are seen at the beginning of the second and later orbits. The purpose of this proposal is to carry out experiments to try to miticate the effects of such traps.
