The Council met from 2:00 to 3:15 p.m. in the University Union Board Room.

The Council re-opened discussion regarding grade appeal concerns that were submitted by the Department of Biology. The concerns centered around the nature of the faculty signature on the appeal form and what it represented. The concern expressed by Biology was that once a faculty member signed the appeal form, they might be “blind-sided” by having additional information submitted by the student after the appeal form was signed by the faculty member. It was emphasized that a faculty signature was not an acknowledgement that evidence/documentation was complete. Rather, the sign-off by the faculty was merely an indication that an informal solution was not achieved and an acknowledgement that a formal grade appeal process has been initiated. Additional documentation, evidence, etc., submitted by either a student or faculty member would amount to a “continuance” and as such, would re-start the “clock” in terms of the timelines outlined in the appeal procedure. Should a student or faculty member wish to bring in new information, both parties were obligated to disclose this information to each other before an actual formal hearing at the department level would be conducted. Further, it was emphasized that should an appeal move from the department to the college or

CAGAS level, no additional evidence/documentation would be accepted from either party.

The Council also responded to questions from Dan Maxwell regarding procedures for submitting forms for sanctioned activities. It was re-affirmed that annually scheduled events required only one request every five years and fell under the heading of permanent status sanctioning. One-time, unanticipated events would require a separate form with a cover letter explaining the nature of the event. Letters sent to individual professors notifying them of the event was considered an accepted practice.

John Kennealy and Byoung Lee are scheduled for the next admissions subcommittee meeting on Tues, November 22 @ 2:00 in the Admissions Office (SH 117). Karen Mann is the alternate.

The Council will meet again at 2:00 p.m. on November 17, 2005 in the University Union

Board Room.
