Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Policy Intent Rosemount Middle School (RMS) grants its students and staff the privilege of using personal mobile devices (laptops, tablets, etc.) of their choosing to complete tasks of an academic or task-related nature at the discretion of supervising teachers and staff. Rosemount Middle School reserves the right to revoke this privilege if users do not abide by the policies and procedures outlined below. This policy is intended to protect the security and integrity of Rosemount Middle School and Independent School District 196’s data and technology infrastructure. Limited exceptions to the policy may occur due to variations in devices and platforms. Users must agree to the terms and conditions set forth in this policy in order to be able to connect their devices to the district network. The user agreement (eAccess Form) is attached to the end of this document. Policy All BYOD policies outlined herein by Rosemount Middle School, from here forward referred to as RMS, shall adhere to, align with, and run concurrent to any and all applicable district policies set forth by Independent School District 196, from here forward referred to as the district. Said policies include, but are not limited to, 503.7AR Acceptable Use of Information Technology - Students, 503.7.1P Permission for Independent Student Access to the Internet, 503.7.1.3P Permission for Student Work to be Published on the Internet. Student devices are limited to laptop computers (Microsoft Windows, Apple, and Google Chrome platforms), tablet devices (iOS and Android platforms), and s martphones running iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows platforms. Cell phones without smart capabilities are strictly prohibited. 1. Student use of a device during the school day is clearly at the discretion of teachers and staff members and is expected to be in support of educational activities. RMS defines acceptable academic use as activities that directly or indirectly support the instructional practices of our school. 2. The RMS campus utilizes four wireless permission zones. Each of the zones defined below are under the direct supervision and authority of the responsible teacher or staff member. a. Red - All personal device use is strictly prohibited. b. Yellow - Personal device use is available only through direct request of the appropriate supervising teacher or staff member for each instance. c. Blue - Personal device use is available based on check-in with the area supervisor. d. Green - Personal device use is openly available. 3. Personal devices may not be connected to the network by a network cable plugged into a data outlet. Network access is provided via wireless access only. 4. Student devices may not be used to establish a wireless ad-hoc or peer-to-peer network using his/her device while connected to RMS’s network. This includes, but is not limited to, using a personal device as a cabled or wireless hotspot. 5. Student use of a device is restricted to the individual student and not to be shared or accessed by other students or users. 6. Student use of a device must not disrupt the learning of others. Sound must be muted at all times unless explicit permission is granted by a teacher or staff member for each instance. 7. Student use of the device’s camera and video capabilities are strictly prohibited in all zones within the RMS campus. Requests for use of video capabilities may be made through the Technology Coordinator in consultation with the appropriate teacher. 8. Students are strictly prohibited from entering the locker rooms, restrooms, or pool area with any device. These areas are zoned red. 9. District-owned academic, instructional, or productivity software and apps shall not be installed on personal devices. 10. Student devices are brought to RMS at the students’ and parents’ own risk. In the event that a privately owned device is lost, stolen, or damaged, RMS is not responsible for any financial or data loss. 11. RMS reserves the right to examine the privately owned student device and search its contents if there is reasonable suspicion that school and/or district policies or local, state and/or federal laws have been violated. Searches will be limited to circumstances in which there is reasonable suspicion that the search will produce evidence of the suspected misconduct. 12. Violation of school or district policies, local, state and/or federal laws while using a personal electronic device on the district wireless network will result in appropriate disciplinary and/or legal action as specified in the Students Rights and Responsibilities Handbook , district policy as well as by local, state and/or federal law. 13. School and district staff cannot attempt to repair, correct, troubleshoot, or be responsible for malfunctioning personal hardware or software. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Guidelines Access to the district’s wireless network shall be granted only upon the completion and submission of the RMS eAccess Form . Once the form has been processed, the individual student will be asked to meet briefly with the Technology Coordinator during a designated time, after which time, the student may then begin to use a device according to the terms of the RMS BYOD Policy . The line items in the guidelines that follow are directly aligned with the policy items stated above. These guidelines serve as a means of further defining the individual policy items. 1. Teachers and staff monitor and control the availability of student use of devices solely at their discretion within their instructional or supervision areas. Should a teacher or staff member ask a student to stop their use of a personal device, the student must comply and power down the device. 2. The four wireless zones are set by individual teachers and staff members within their area. Teachers and staff members may change the status of their area at any time, moving from an open access status to a fully prohibited status within the course of a day and/or period. a. Red - This zone prohibited the use of all devices. Students should not bring devices into red zones. Devices should be secured in the student’s locker. b. Yellow - This zone may allow student use of a device based on direct permission being granted by the supervising teacher or staff member. Permission is required for each instance of usage. In other words, students should ask permission to use their devices in these zones each time while the area in labeled yellow. c. Blue - These zones are typically in areas such as common spaces (IMC, multi-purpose area, waiting areas, etc.). Students should check in with the appropriate teacher or staff member for zone status. d. Green - These zones are open access for student use of a device. Supervisor check-in is not required. 3. No personal devices may be tethered to the district network via a network, USB, firewire, nor any other cable. Devices may only attached to and authenticate through the district’s wireless network. 4. Students shall not, if their device is capable, create or set up shared access or hotspot networks with the intent of providing other students wireless access. 5. Access to the wireless network is granted on an individual basis. If a student is granted access, they are not to provide that access to any other individual either by device exchange or by sharing authentication credentials. 6. Devices should be muted at all times while on the RMS campus. If a student’s use of a device is found to be disruptive, the student will be considered to have violated the BYOD Policy. 7. Device cameras and video options should be disabled, if possible, while on the RMS campus. Camera or video use is not allowed in any zone. If a student has an academic reason for use of the video capabilities on their device, the student will need to discuss the usage with the appropriate teacher, who will then make a request of the Technology Coordinator to grant access/usage. This permission, if granted, must be under the direct supervision of the requesting teacher and is a single use instance. 8. Students shall not bring devices into areas such as the locker rooms, restrooms, or pool area. These areas are zoned red at all times. 9. Neither students nor school district personnel may install any district-owned software and apps of personal devices. All applicable licensing requirements will be strictly enforced. 10. Students who choose to bring a device to school assume total responsibility for the device. Devices that are stolen or damaged are the responsibility of the student and their parents or guardians. Students should take all reasonable steps to protect against the theft or damage of their personal device. Devices found unattended should be turned into the IMC Office. 11. RMS reserves the right to temporarily seize and examine the device if there is reasonable suspicion that the student violated school and/or district policies or local, state and/or federal laws and it is believed that evidence of the misconduct may be found on the device. 12. RMS abides by all district policies and guidelines along with any applicable local, state, and/or federal laws in its implementation of our BYOD policy. 13. Connectivity and device operation issues are not supported by instructional nor technical staff members; students should contact the device manufacturer or their carrier for operating system, network, or hardware-related issues. Students and parents should take every precaution to prevent their personal data from being lost in the event the device is lost or stolen. It is the student’s responsibility to take additional precautions, such as backing up email, contacts, etc. eAccess Form Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) As the parent, legal guardian, or student, I have read, understand, and agree that my child, ward, or myself shall comply with the terms of the Rosemount Middle School BYOD Policy and Guidelines. I understand that access is being provided to the students for educational purposes only. However, I understand that it is impossible for the district to restrict access to all offensive and controversial materials, and further understand my child or ward’s responsibility for abiding by these guidelines. I am therefore acknowledging these guidelines and agree to indemnify and hold harmless the school and school district that provide the opportunity for technology access against all claims, damages, losses, and costs that may result from my child, ward’s or my own use of access to technology or violation of the school and district’s policies as outlined in the RMS BYOD Policy and Guidelines.
