Pacific University School of Communication Sciences and Disorders Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology Prerequisite Courses Course Credit Grade Description Phonetics 3 3 A phonetics course that covers human speech sound production and speech sound systems with a major emphasis on the application into clinical settings and the process and practice of clinical transcription. Speech Science 3 3 A course that covers the science of speech including acoustics, production, and perception. A&P 3 3 An anatomy and physiology course that specifically covers structures and functions important for speech production and swallowing. A general A&P course will not meet this requirement. Speech & Language Development 3 3 A course that covers the acquisition of speech and language skills in typically developing children and adolescents. Audiology 3 2 A course that covers the anatomy of the ear, normal and disordered hearing, basic principles of audiometry, and aural rehabilitation. Neuroanatomy 3 3 A course that covers the anatomy & physiology of the central & peripheral nervous systems, with an emphasis on development & typical functioning of structures & systems that specifically support communication, behavior, & swallowing. Must be CSD specific. Biologic Science 3 2 A course that covers the study and characterization of living organisms and the investigation of the science of living things. For example, courses could include biology, genetics, life sciences, natural science, or zoology. Physical Science 3 2 A course that covers the science of matter, energy, motion, and force (e.g. physics) or the study of substances (e.g. chemistry). Other acceptable courses could include astronomy, geology, meteorology, or oceanography. Social Science 3 2 A course that covers the study of human behavior. For example, courses could include anthropology, psychology, sociology, or public health. Statistics 3 2 A stand alone course in statistics is required. This course could be taken in mathematics, psychology, education, or CSD. However, a research methodology course may not be used to satisfy this requirement. All prerequisite requirements must be completed prior to enrolling in the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program.
