Thomas and Eyvette Hetherington Leaders and Achievers Scholarship [$10,000] This scholarship is awarded to a current law student who has overcome socioeconomic obstacles, exhibits good moral character and a strong work ethic. Financial need and family obligations may also be factors of consideration. Please submit an essay addressing the aforementioned criteria. Ron Bass Scholarship [$6000] The Ron Bass scholarship is given in memory of Ron Bass, a sole practitioner who had a strong belief in civil liberties and a sincere interest in making a positive difference in his clients’ lives. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who will be enrolled during the 2016-2017 academic year and shows a sincere interest in civil liberties and/or making a difference in others’ lives as demonstrated through volunteer activities, coursework, and other relevant factors, and is in need of scholarship support for the continuation of his/her education. James E. Crowther Scholarship [$2,500] This scholarship will be awarded to a student who will be enrolled during the 2016-2017 academic year and is committed to public interest work. Please include information demonstrating your past and present commitment to public interest. Claude Hippard Scholarship [$2,500] This scholarship is awarded to a current 2L student who has outstanding moral character, financial need, and demonstrates an interest in government service. To be considered for this scholarship, the student must submit an essay that discusses his/her motivation for attending law school and how a law degree will benefit society. Judge Mary Bacon Scholarship [$1,500] This scholarship will be awarded to a current student exemplifying professionalism while maintaining a two generation household living at the same residence. (This includes students with children, as well as those living with a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc.) Samson Memorial Animal Law Scholarship [$1,000] The Samson Memorial Animal Law Scholarship is in memory of Moe and Louise Nasr’s beloved German Shepherd dog, Samson, and is in dedication to the protection of all animals. To be considered for this scholarship, current students should demonstrate a passion for and commitment to animal advocacy by submitting an essay to the question found here: http://www.law.uh.edu/oss/SamsonMemorialScholarshipEssay.pdf. Richard Simmons Memorial Scholarship [$1,000] In memory of Richard Simmons, a United States Bankruptcy Trustee, this scholarship will be awarded to a student who has demonstrated an interest in bankruptcy, through coursework, activities, internships, clerkships or employment. ConocoPhillips Energy Studies Award[$1000] This award is offered by ConocoPhillips to a 2016 graduating student who has shown a significant interest in the area of energy, environmental and natural resources. If you have taken a significant number of courses in this area or have written an article in this area, please submit a list of courses or the article title and any other relevant information demonstrating your interest in the energy, environmental and resources area as a career. David Toomim Scholarship [$1,000] David Toomim began law school after a very successful career in public accounting, but he never would have been able to attend college without a scholarship. In memory of this remarkable graduate, this scholarship will be awarded to a current student who is over the age of 30, has financial need and a passion for the law. Celia Figueroa Memorial Scholarship [$1,000] The Celia Figueroa Scholarship was established in honor of the late Celia Figueroa by her family, friends, and employer, BBVA Bancomer USA, for whom she served as General Counsel. The Scholarship is to be awarded annually to a UHLC student who has displayed excellence in his/her studies and service to the Law Center community. Preference will be given to a current 2L student who has family obligations and/or whose career involves international business experience. Gil Epstein Scholarship [$1,000] This scholarship will be awarded to a 2016 graduating student who plans to be a criminal lawyer and has shown the greatest promise in that regard. Please attach a brief explanation or intended career path in criminal law. Nancy Snyder-Nepo Scholarship [$1,000] In memory of Nancy Snyder-Nepo, a 1990 graduate who died at a young age, this scholarship was established to assist an outstanding student who will be enrolled during the 2016-2017 academic year and is a parent. Robert Allen Memorial Student Excellence Fund [$1,000] This scholarship was established in memory of Robert Allen, this scholarship was established to provide assistance to a part-time student who has a passion for the law. Joan Garfinkel Glantz Award [$500] This award is given to a 2016 graduating student who has worked extensively in the area of civil liberties. Interested candidates should include a resume and a letter stating the reasons why he/she is the best candidate. The letter should demonstrate the candidate’s dedication to civil liberties and helping those who are in need of help. Barksdale Stevens Award [$500] This award is presented to a deserving 2016 graduating student who is active and shows an interest in the Law Center. Caroline Hirsch (Vanik) Beers Award [$500] Awarded to a single parent law student who has a love of the law and a commitment to social service. Houston Bar Association (HBA) Corporate Counsel [$1,000] This scholarship is awarded to a 2L or 3L student who demonstrates (a) strong interest in corporate/business law, as evidenced by coursework and/or work experience and (b) strong academic performance. If the student is involved in any student organizations or other activities that are related to this practice area, that will also be taken into consideration. Houston Bar Association Probate, Trusts & Estates [$1,000] This award is given to a 2L or 3L student, who has completed at least one of the following courses: Trust & Wills, Estate Planning, and Administration of Estates & Guardianship and has shown exemplary success in any of the subject areas through superior grades, publication or internships. It is an added plus if a student has shown interest in pursuing a career in the subject areas identified above. Houston Bar Association Real Estate Law Section [$1,000] This award is given to 2L or 3L student who has excelled in Real Estate courses and demonstrates an interest in pursuing a career in the practice area.
