ELECTIVE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
FULL YEAR ELECTIVES
70MUS1: BAND7: Seventh grade band is primarily designed for students with two years of experience on a band instrument. The
two main components of band are small group lessons and large group band rehearsals. Every student receives one small group lesson
in an 8-day cycle. Large group band rehearsals are conducted every other day. Additional performance opportunities are available
through small ensembles, jazz ensembles and other special groups. All students will participate in at least two concerts during the
school year.
70MUS2: CHOIR7: Do you enjoy singing? Come together with your friends and have fun making music! Learn to become a great
performer. We sing everything from Bach to rock, “Ode to Joy” to Lean On Me.” Have no fear…this is large group singing. Small
group and solo options are available for the future stars. You’ll have the opportunity to perform in at least two concerts throughout the
year.
70FOR6: SPANISH 1-A: ¡Hola! Students will learn basic conversational skills including vocabulary for introductions,
asking/answering where people come from, personal likes/dislikes, describing themselves and others, school schedules and classes,
free-time activities and food. Communication skills will focus on listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Homework completion,
memorization of vocabulary, preparation for quizzes and tests, and active class participation is required. To ensure success in this
class, students need to have a strong reading background to register for Spanish 1A. ¡Avancemos!
TRIMESTER ELECTIVES
All Art classes may include, but are not limited to: Clay, Colored Pencil, Watercolors/Tempera, Pencil/Charcoal, Oil/Chalk Pastels,
Brush and Ink, Plaster, Paper Mache and Woven Materials. Projects are designed around the elements and principles of design, art
history and self-evaluation.
70ART5: DRAWING & BEYOND II - Learn to use your imagination to express yourself. This class will use a variety of art
materials and techniques to create original works of art. Projects will focus on 2-dimensional creations.
70ART6: COOL CREATIONS II - Projects will focus on 3-dimensional forms. Students will create 3-dimensional art in a variety
of materials and methods.
70ART7: PAINTING, PENCILS & MORE II - Projects may focus on 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works of art.
All Family and Consumer Science electives listed below are new courses designed for anyone interested in FACS. No previous FACS
courses are required and all recipes and projects will be DIFFERENT from the current school year.
70FCS5: COOKING FOR EVERYONE! - Even the world's top chefs have to start somewhere! This food-lab based course is
the perfect introduction to cooking for a variety of diets, even if you’ve never cooked more than a PB&J sandwich. You'll learn
preparation and cooking techniques as you prepare a selection of delicious foods, all while addressing the specific nutritional needs
for children, athletes, and special dietary restrictions. Bring your appetite for knowledge and food!
70FCS6: CREATIVE PRODUCT DESIGN - Do you like to work with your hands to create? Do food and home design
programs captivate your attention? If cooking delicious food and sewing a one-of-a-kind project sounds appealing, then this class is
for you! In CPD, you will tap into your creative side by exploring culinary arts, fabric arts, and home interior design in a hands-on
way that reflects your unique personality. Bring your love for food, engineering thinking for design, and your artistic spirit!
70FCS7: SUSTAINABLE LIVING SKILLS - Do you like to get the most for your money? Use your creative side and join the
trend in “upscaling”! Decisions, decisions, decisions…. work with an online program to make financial choices to see how you
would fare in the real world. Are you a spender or a saver? Prepare meals that use ingredients you may commonly have on hand to
make the best use of your money! You will be preparing food labs, sewing a quick “recycling” project, and enhancing your money
management skills!
All Tech Ed electives listed below are new courses designed for anyone interested in Tech Ed. No previous experience is required and
all projects will be different from the current school year.
70TEC5: ADVANCED TECH ED - A general technology education class designed for girls and boys that will build on 6th grade
experiences. This class may include topics in energy and power utilization, construction, transportation, and communications.
70TEC6: PRODUCT DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT - A class designed to give girls and boys an experience in designing a
product from start to finish. Students will work with sketching, drawing, and 3D modeling. Typical products may include: CD rack,
wall clock, shadow box, wall shelf, jewelry tree, t-shirt design.
70TEC7: WOOD AND MANUFACTURING - A class designed to give girls and boys an experience producing a variety of
projects. Students will build projects that emphasize different approaches. This may include setting up a company using an assembly
line to mass-produce a product to creating a project using custom made techniques and building principles. You will learn skills that
last a lifetime.
