Overseeding bermudagrass with a cool season grass species is often necessary because of cold temperature dormancy (to bermudagrass) realized in the overwhelmingly large majority of winter seasons. Forty (40) entries of either perennial, annual, or hybrid ryegrass cultivars, blends and species mixtures, were evaluated for season long overseed performance under semi-arid conditions over Tifway bermudagrass mowed at 5/8”. Treatment “mean squares” were statistically significant on all evaluation dates for turfgrass color, quality, density, texture, and percent canopy composition. Entries differed in mean quality performance based on the time of year (fall, winter vs. spring). Entries with high fall/winter quality scores included Cutter II perennial ryegrass, Dasher III perennial ryegrass, PST-2TQL perennial ryegrass, PST-
2TQL perennial ryegrass, Revenge GLX perennial ryegrass, 7.0516 perennial ryegrass, DGA ryegrass blend, Derby, 03 PT-3 Poa trivialis, and Palmer V.
Entries which ranked highest for spring performance included New Arrival,
Palmer GLS, L4O-6-XLT-1, Patriot 4, Overture blend, Shining Star, and 041-
LH. Entries which ranked highest for year round quality included New Arrival,
Palmer V, Palmer GLS, 03PT3 Poa trivialis, PST-2TQL, Overture blend 042LH hybrid ryegrass, and Top Gun II. Entries which had an early and strong transition as well as good quality prior to and including the transition included the following: Patriot 4, Shining Star, L040-6-XLT-1, 04-2 LH hybrid ryegrass,
Applaud II, 7.0156, Revenge GLX, SPT-2T QL, Palmer 4 and New Arrival.
Turfgrass, Landscape and Urban IPM Research Summary, (P-157), February 2009 84
The king of grass, bermudagrass, does not stay green year round in the low elevation desert alleys of Phoenix,
Tucson, Coachella Valley, and Las Vegas. Therefore many golf course and sports turf facilities overseed in the late summer, early fall to provide a year-round live turf system. With this in mind, a replicated field trial was conducted to evaluate cool season germplasm which included perennial ryegrass, hybrid ryegrass, ryegrass blends, Poa trivialis, and species mixtures thereof. Germplasm included commercially available germplasm, accessions or lines of advanced composites, or synthetic breeding populations.
The host turf was a 10 year old turf of Tifway 419, maintained at 5/8”. The turf was prepared by decreasing irrigation by 50% of reference ET from October 10-15, and then to 0% from 10/15 to 10/23. The turf was scalped and lightly verticut in opposite directions on October 20. Entries were planted using hand shakers and 3’ x 6’ seed cages. Ryegrass entries were seeded at 625 lbs. PLS/acre. Each entry was repeated four times in a RCB field design. Visual data assigned to plots accordingly included; percent plot composition (establishment and transition), as well as turfgrass quality, density and texture using the NTEP visual rating scale system (1-9, 1=dead, 5=marginal,
6=accep, 9=best possible). For turfgrass color (1-9), (1= dead, 4=pea green, 5= light green, 6=medium green, 9= deep forest green). All data were subjected to the analysis of variance technique using SAS software, with “entries” treated as non-structured treatments. LSD values were calculated as the treatment mean separation statistic, only if the mean squares for the “treatment” source of variation generated a F ratio at a P value of P=0.05, or less.
For spring transition, plots were evaluated for percent bermudagrass cover (0-100%) and ranked by their entry value mean among all 40 entries. Then, an analysis of variance was performed on the rank values themselves, with date mean values used as replications. Duncan’s NMRT values were then used to generate “class value ranks” used as “final rank” values for transition. This ranking was then used with other variables (i.e., over quality) to ascertain varieties with all around (multiple trait) performance.
Establishment:
The percent plot cover ranged from 50% (Texas) to 98% for 7.0517 perennial ryegrass. Average plot cover was
83% on November 17 (Table 1). Entries with less than 80% overseed coverage (at that time) included “Shining star”, 04-1 LH, PST-2COL, PST-C4, PST 2Q4, PST-2SNS, La Quinta, Axcella hybrid ryegrass, 06 LM, TL/Peak mixture, Panterra/06 LMTL, Aquarius 4, 03 PT-3, Top Gun II and Texas annual.
Turfgrass, Landscape and Urban IPM Research Summary, (P-157), February 2009 85
Likewise, apparent density ratings (1-9 NTEP scale) ranged form 4.8 (Texas, 06LML TL/Peak), to 8.3 (Derby perennial ryegrass) (Table 2). Other entries which produced dense appearing turfs included Crescendo ryegrass
(7.8), Palmer V ryegrass (7.8), PST 216S ryegrass (7.5), 7.0517 ryegrass (7.5), 7.0516 ryegrass (7.3) Revenge GLX ryegrass (7.3), PST 2TQL (7.3), and New Arrival (7.3). Axcella annual ryegrass had a mean density score of 5.3 on
17 November 2007. The intermediate ryegrass entries of 04-2LH and 04-1 LH had density ratings of 7.0 and 5.5, respectively (Table 2).
Post Frost Temperature Performance:
The months of December and January produce cold night temperatures, with heavy repeated frosts. These conditions dramatically slow the growth of the overseed species and turn any remaining and/or underlying bermudagrass (now as fully dormant straw bermudagrass).
Percent plot straw ratings were assigned to plots on both 14 January and 9 February, 2008. On average, 10% to 12% of the canopy was straw on these dates, but entries ranged from 3% to 33% plot straw on 14 January, and from 3% to 27% on 9 February, 2008 (Table 3). On 14 January, entries which had 20% or more percent plot straw included the following: Revenge ryegrass (21%), T3 ryegrass (30%); and APR 2114 ryegrass (33%). Entries with 5% or less straw included 04-1 LH hybrid ryegrass, Axcella annual ryegrass (5%), DGA rye blend (5%), and Panterra/06
LMTL mixture (3%) (Table 3).
By 9 February 2008, there were still noticeable amounts of straw present, ranging from 3% to 27%. Again, APR
2114 (26%) and T3 had the most plot straw (22%), while 03 PT-3, Poa trivialis and Panterra/06 LTML had the least
(3%) (Table 3).
General Turfgrass Attributes:
Color:
From 17 November to 21 May 2008, mean test color averages ranged from 5.8 to 6.1. However, individual entry means for color ranged from 3.3 to 8.0 across all evaluation dates (Table 3). Entries which tended to have darker color included the Overton blend, Crescendo, and Dasher III. These entries had mean color scores of 7.1 to 7.2 throughout most rating dates. During the period of continuous cold weather (December), Dasher III and Top Gun II were quite dark (7.5) followed closely by Revenge GLX (7.3), 5.1318 ryegrass (7.3), Derby (7.3) and DGA rye blend (7.3) (Table 3).
Throughout the late spring and early transition period (April and May), the following entries had color scores of 7.0 or greater; Crescendo PR, Overture Blend, New-Arrival, Dasher III, PST 2TQL, Top Gun II, 5.1318 ryegrass,
7.0515 ryegrass, 7.01516 ryegrass, Derby, and PGA ryegrass blend (Table 3).
Turfgrass, Landscape and Urban IPM Research Summary, (P-157), February 2009 86
Throughout the test, 03PT-3 Poa trivialis had a lighter turf color than ryegrasses, which was inherently the case for
Poa trivialis: Axcella annual ryegrass averaged 4.5 for the yearly average for color, while 06 LM T4 Peak averaged
4.9 (annual/perennial ryegrass mixture). The hybrids 04-2 LH and 04-1 LH averaged 5.9 and 5.5 in color, respectively (Table 3).
Texture:
Texture scores were assigned on four dates, from 17 November to 25 April just prior to transition. Texture is a visual estimate of relative leaf width between entries, again using the 1-9 NTEP scale. Fine textures were apparent for some entries soon after the first mowings on 17 November, Dasher III (7.5), PST-21GS (7.5), while others produced thinner leaves later on in the spring; La Quinta (7.8), PST-2SNS (7.8), Interlude (7.5), PST-2TQL (7.8),
L-40-6XLT-1 (8.0 ), Palmer GLS (8.0), Palmer V (7.8) and Top Gun II (8.0) (Table 4). While as a species, Poa trivialis is fine textured, it had leaf widths slightly greater than of some perennial ryegrass entries.
Texas intermediate had broad leaves, but there were uniformly consistent across the plot. Among other hybrid ryegrass entries, 04-2-LH maintained a narrow leaf condition throughout the test (6.5, yearly average), followed closely by 04-1-LH hybrid ryegrass (5.8) (Table 4).
Quality:
Overall turfgrass quality is a visual integration of texture, density, uniformity, smoothness and consistency of color across the plot.
Quality mean scores among entries ranged from 3.5 to 8.5 during the test. Peak quality periods (averaged over all entries) occurred for December (6.2), March (6.3), quality (6.3), and May (6.1) (Table 5).
Entries which showed good quality soon after the first mowing on 17 November included Palmer V ryegrass (7.5),
Revenge GLX (7.3), 7.0516 (7.3), 7.0517 (7.3), Cutter II (7.3), Crescendo (7.0), Top Gun II (7.0), PST-2TQL (7.0), and Derby (7.0 ). Entries which had good fall and early winter quality ( fall/winter average ) mean scores included
Palmer (6.9), DGA ryeblend (6.9), 7.0516 (6.6), Revenge GLX (6.5), Dasher III 6.5), O3 PT-3 (6.3), Derby (6.4),
PST-2TQL (6.3), Cutter II (6.3), and Crescendo (6.3) (Table 5).
On 9 February, Pant 06/LMTL and 03 PT-3 ranked first for quality, both having mean scores of 7.3. Texas annual also had very good quality at this time (6.8). In March, New Arrival had the highest quality mean scores (8.5), followed by Palmer GLS (7.8), Patriot 4 (7.8), Shining Star (7.5), Applaud II (7.5), and PS7 TQL (7.3) (Table 5.)
Turfgrass, Landscape and Urban IPM Research Summary, (P-157), February 2009 87
On 25 April, L-40-6-XL7-1, had a mean quality score of (8.0), followed by New Arrival (7.8), PST 2TQl (7.3),
Palmer GLS (7.3), Patriot 4 (7.3) and PST 2QL (7.3). On 21 May, Palmer GLS had a mean quality core of 7.8, followed by LX-40-6-XLT-1 (7.5), 042LH hybrid ryegrass (7.3) New Arrival (7.3) and OPT-3 (7.3). Other entries
(all with mean quality values of 7.0) included Patriot 4, 7.0516, and Shining Star (Table 5).
The “spring average” for quality (mean of February, March, April and May ratings) ranged from 5.3 to 7.2. Texas annual averaged 5.3, while New Arrival averaged 7.2, followed closely by Palmer GLS (7.1), L-40-6-XLT-1 (6.9),
Shining Star (6.8), Overture blend (6.8) and Patriot 4 (6.8) and Applaud II (6.6). The intermediate ryegrass entries of 04-2-LH and 04-1-LH had mean “spring average” quality scores of 6.6 and 6.1, respectively (Table 5). This data demonstrates improved spring performance of current hybrid ryegrass germplasm prior to the beginning of the transition period, when prior hybrid germplasm usually becomes stemmy from early flowering culms emerging into the canopy.
Yearly quality averages among the highest ranking entries included New Arrival (6.8), Palmer GLS l(6.6), Palmer V
(6.6), Overture blend (6.6), 7.0516 (6.4) Crescendo (6.3), Dasher III (6.3), PST-2TQL (6.5) Top Gun II (6.3) L-40-
6-XLT-1 (6.3), Derby (6.3), DGA blend (6.5), OPT-3 (6.5) and Applaud II (6.3). The hybrid ryegrass 04-2 LH had a year-long quality mean average of 6.2, followed closely by 04-1-LH (5.8). Texas annual averaged 4.9 for its yearly quality average (Table 5).
This test showed that different entries had peak performance times, as “fall/winter” quality average values among entries were not necessarily similar to “spring average” quality performance. If fall quality is more critical than that of spring quality (or vice versa), then different entries should be considered based on the time of year general appearance is most important.
Transition:
Percent plot bermudagrass scores were assigned on 12 May, 23 May, 3 June, and 12 June. Entries which had the most amounts of bermudagrass on 12 May included Axcella annual (79%), Texas annual (71%), La Quinta (64%),
Panterra/06 LMTL blend (66%), and 06LM TL/Peak (75%). The Poa trivialis entry of 03-PT-3 had 12% bermudagrass cover, on average on 12 May (Table 1).
On 3 June, percent bermudagrass ranged from 15% (03-PT-3) Poa trivialis), to 75%, for Top Gun II. Entries 7.0517 and PST-21GS also both had 70% or more bermudagrass on this date. By mid June, the percent bermudagrass
(Tifway 419) increased among the “slower” transitioning entries to an average of approximately 70% bermudagrass.
The least amount of bermudagrass was 62% for OPT-3 Poa trivialis, with 80% or more bermudagrass occurring on
Texas annual, Panterra/06 LTML, Axcella annual, L-40-6-XLT-1, 06LM TL/Peak and Patriot 4 (Table 1).
Turfgrass, Landscape and Urban IPM Research Summary, (P-157), February 2009 88
Spring transition rank scores were devised from analyzing entry ranks (from 1-40) on each date, with “date” becoming a replication event. The resultant analysis produced 10 mean separation classes (via Duncan’s New
Multiple Range Test) for transition for the 40 entries (Table 6). Based on that analysis, entries which had the quickest transition as a “process” (value = 10) included Shining Star, 04-2-LH hybrid ryegrass. PST-21GS, La
Quinta, 7.0517, L-40-6XLT-1, Axcella annual rye, 06LM T4 Peak, Panterra /06 LMTL, Patriot 4, and Texas annual.
Entries in group 9 for spring transition rank included PST-2Q4 and T3 followed by group 8 which included
Aquarius 4, 7.0516, Revenge GLX, PST-2-C4, 04-1-LH hybrid ryegrass, APR 2114, and Applaud II (Table 6).
Entries which had transition occur as a “slower process” included Group 3 (Overture blend, 5.1318, Palmer GLS;
Group 2 (DGA ryegrass blend), and Group 1; (03-PT-3) Poa trivialis (Table 6).
Transition and Turf Quality Together:
A combined numerical (composite performance index) was devised (CPI) by adding together the number of times each entry had a mean quality score of 6.0 or greater, plus the number of times an entry had a mean quality score of
7.0 or greater, plus the previously discussed transition class rank separation value ( 1-10 ). The sum of these three values became the calculated CPI value.
The CPI values ranged from 7 to 17. Higher values indicate good yearly quality performance with a good overall transition process. Entries with high (17 – 15) CPI values included L-40-6-XLT-1 (17), Portrait 4 (16) and New
Arrival (16), followed by 042-LH hybrid ryegrass (15), Applaud II (15), 7.0516 (15), Revenge GLX (15), PST-
2TQL (15) and Shining Star (15) (Table 6). Again, these entries had good quality under all or most conditions, and had transition occur earlier than most other entries (Table 6). Since final transition values (percent bermudagrass on
June 12) showed that most entries varied by no more than 15-20% in absolute bermudagrass cover between entries, the end user may select varieties based on fall, spring, and/or yearly quality values, noting that bermudagrass should have 90 days of full cover before preparation for the next overseed begins.
1. Treatment “mean squares” were statistically significant on all evaluation dates for turfgrass color, quality, density, texture, and percent canopy composition.
2. Entries differed in mean quality performance based on the time of year (fall, winter vs. spring).
3. Entries with high fall/winter quality scores included Cutter II perennial ryegrass, Dasher III perennial ryegrass, PST-2TQL perennial ryegrass, PST-2TQL perennial ryegrass, Revenge GLX perennial ryegrass, 7.0516 perennial ryegrass, DGA rye blend, Derby, 03 PT-3 Poa trivialis, and Palmer V.

4.
Entries which ranked highest for spring quality performance included New Arrival, Palmer GLS, L4O-6-
XLT-1, Patriot 4, Overture blend, Shining Star, and the Hybrid ryegrass 041-LH.
5.
Entries which ranked highest for year round quality included New Arrival, Palmer V. Palmer GLS, 03PT3
Poa trivialis, PST-2TQL, Overture blend 042LH hybrid ryegrass, and Top Gun II.
6. Entries which had an early and strong transition as well as good quality prior to and including the transition included the following: Patriot 4, Shining Star, L040-6-XLT-1, 04-2 LH hybrid ryegrass, Applaud II, 7.0156,
Revenge GLX, SPT-2T QL, Palmer 4 and New Arrival.

Quality = (1-9). 1= dead, 5= marginal, 6= fully acceptable, 9= best possible. Values are the mean of four replications.
Percent composition of plot cover (0-100%). Values are the mean of four replications.
Test mean = mean of all entries on each evaluation date. .
LSD Value = used as the treatment mean separation statistic. Entries which differ in a value greater than the LSD are significantly different from each other.
Transition rank group = class separation rankings based on % plot bermuda rankings on four (4) evaluation dates, were dates are used as replications for treatment ANOVA / DNMRT.
CPI Value = "Composite Perfromance Index = total value of "quality sum index" plus the "Transition Rank value". Higher values indicate higher quality and faster trans ition combined.
Resultant values are from 7 to 15. Entries with scores of 15, 16 or 17 have higher ranking CPI scores.
