7.5a Solving Radical Equations
It's amazing how quickly nature consumes human places
after we turn our backs on them. Life is a hungry thing.
Definitions
A radical equation is an equation that has a variable in a radicand
(or a variable with a fractional exponent).
Steps to solving a radical equation:
1) Isolate the radical on one side of the equation.
2) Raise both sides of the equation to the same power.
3) Check your solution(s). Some may be extraneous.
4  2 x  28 is a radical equation
4  2 x  28 is not a radical equation
Solving - *check for extraneous solutions
Ex1) Solve  10  2 x  1  5.
Solving - *check for extraneous solutions
Ex2) Solve x  2 x  4  2.
Solving - *check for extraneous solutions
Ex3) Solve
x  2  3  2 x.
