Welcome to the online training portion for the School Garden Food Safety Guidelines. This training is brought to you by The Arizona Agricultural Literacy Program, a program of The University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Cooperative Extension. 1 The following is a supplementary video to the School Garden Food Safety training videos. It provides more detailed information related to the certification process offered by ADHS. 1 This brief video will explain the steps associated with requesting a site visit from ADHS in conjunction with your school garden becoming certified and for its produce to be served in your school’s cafeteria. 1 The Site Visit Application is the last document related to the certification process. It is to be submitted to ADHS along with a copy of your Food Safety Plan, Garden Map, and water & soil test results. Information related to these additional documents can be found in each of the previous supplemental videos. Using harvested rainwater and compost are optional gardening methods that require additional safety procedures and documentation. If your garden uses either of these, you will need to include the associated documentation along with the Site Visit Application. Information related to Harvested Rainwater and Composting SOPs and Attestations can be found in the supplemental videos Ensure Water Safety and Ensure Soil Safety. The Site Visit Application is a single-page document that is made up of two sections. The remainder of this brief video will focus on the application and its two sections. 2 This is the first section of the Site Visit Application created by ADHS. This single-page document was an available resource on their website at the time of this video production. Although ADHS may change their documents, The University of Arizona’s website will always have the most current version of documents offered by ADHS. This first section of the Site Visit Application is to contain the contact information for the school and the Garden Manager. 3 This is the second and final sections of the Site Visit Application. It is to contain information related to your garden. Note the information in red. It references the need for results related to water and soil tests. The final section is a place for a signature. It is recommended that the Garden Manager coordinate with the school district’s risk management division to determine who should sign the application. 4 Remember, these trainings are an optional resource to help you understand how to have your school garden certified and for its produce to be served in the school cafeteria. Although a certificate is not required for students to eat the garden’s produce in the classroom or directly from the garden, following the principles outlined in the School Garden Food Safety Guidelines is strongly encouraged for all gardens to reduce health risks. If you feel that your garden is ready to be certified you can contact Kathryn Mathewson at ADHS. 1 To begin the certification process, reference the provided information. 2 All resources, documents, and forms referenced in these trainings can be accessed at The University of Arizona’s website. 3 Questions regarding this training can be directed to the shown email address. 4
