The first law to segregate blacks from whites on public transportation in Montgomery had been passed in the early years of the century, and black Montgomeryites had attempted to boycott public transportation at that time, without success. They accepted this indignity for years, until just after World War II, when many returning black soldiers protested strongly having to suffer discrimination back home in their own country after having risked their lives for their country in the war. In response, in 1945, Montgomery passed a new law aimed at making the old one even stronger. 1. Who is the author of the source above? 2. What is the name of the source? 3. Is this a primary or secondary source? Why? Find one piece of evidence proving that laws segregating public transportation in Montgomery existed before 1945. Present this evidence below using quotation marks and the method of citation by parentheses, letting us know the author and page number of the source you are quoting. Now find one piece of evidence proving that World War II encouraged African American veterans to fight against discrimination at home. Cite it using direct citation (include the author’s name and the name of the source) and parentheses (include the author and page number). 4
