A dynamic model is proposed for a polymer foam-based nonlinear cushioning system. An accurate analytical solution for the nonlinear free vibration of the system is derived by applying He’s variational iteration method, and conditions for resonance are obtained, which should be avoided in the cushioning design. 1. Introduction Packaged products can be potentially damaged by dropping. In order to prevent any damage, a product and a cushioning packaging are always included in a packaging system [1, 2], and it is very important to investigate the condition for resonance. However, the oscillation in the packaging system is of inherent nonlinearity [3–5], and it remains a problem to obtain the resonance condition for nonlinear packaging system. Polymer foams, especially EPS (expanded polystyrene), are widely used for cushion or protective packaging, and the governing equations can be expressed as 3 By using Taylor series for sin ๐ and tan ๐, (2) can be equivalently written as ฬ ๐ฝ3 ๐กโ (๐ฝ1 ๐ฅ) + ๐ฝ4 tan (๐ฝ2 ๐ฅ) ๐๐ฅ+ + ๐ฝ5 tan3 (๐ฝ2 ๐ฅ) = 0, ๐ฅ (0) = 0, By introducing these parameters: ๐0 = √๐/๐ฝ1 ๐ฝ3 , ๐ฟ = 1/๐ฝ1 and let ๐ = ๐ฅ/๐ฟ, ๐ = ๐ก/๐0 , ๐ 1 = ๐ฝ2 /๐ฝ1 , ๐ 2 = ๐ฝ4 /๐ฝ3 , and ๐ 3 = ๐ฝ5 /๐ฝ3 , (1) can be written in the following forms (1) ๐ฅฬ (0) = √2๐โ. Here, the coefficient ๐ denotes the mass of the packaged product, while ๐ฝ๐ denote, respectively, the characteristic constants of polymer foams which could be obtained by compression test, and โ is the dropping height. 3 (3) 2 Abstract and Applied Analysis where where ๐ = 1 + ๐1๐2, ๐01 = √1 + ๐ 1 ๐ 2 . (4) 1 1 ๐ = − + ๐ 2 ๐31 + ๐ 3 ๐31 , 3 3 2. Variational Iteration Method ๐= The variational iteration method [6–13] has been widely applied in solving many different kinds of nonlinear equations [6–16], and is especially effective in solving nonlinear vibration problems with approximations [17–20]. Applying the variational iteration method [6–13], the following iteration formulae can be constructed: ๐1 = ๐0 + 1 ๐01 2 2 + ๐ 2 ๐51 + ๐ 3 ๐51 , 15 15 ๐= (8) 11 ๐ ๐7 . 15 3 1 3. Resonance The resonance can be expected when one of the following conditions is met: Ω = ๐01 , 1 Ω = ๐01 , 3 ๐ก 2 × ∫ sin ๐01 (๐ − ๐ก) {๐ฬ 0 + ๐01 ๐0 0 1 Ω = ๐01 , 5 1 1 + (− + ๐ 3 ๐31 + ๐ 2 ๐31 ) ๐03 3 3 2 2 + ( + ๐ 2 ๐51 + ๐ 3 ๐51 ) ๐05 15 15 + 11 ๐ ๐7 ๐7 } ๐๐ . 15 3 1 0 (5) 1 Ω = ๐01 . 7 These conditions should be avoided during the cushioning packaging design procedure. 4. Conclusion The conditions for resonance, which should be avoided in the cushioning packaging design procedure, can be easily obtained using the variational iteration method. Beginning with the initial solutions, ๐0 = ๐ด sin (Ω๐ก) .
