LinguaFolio® Resources for 2012-2013
LinguaFolio® is a powerful formative assessment tool for language learning that fits well into a comprehensive balanced
assessment system to help globally position students for life in the 21st century.
LinguaFolio® is a proficiency-based, formative assessment tool that:
 motivates and rewards language learners and
 informs instruction.
LinguaFolio® is based on the European Language Portfolio (ELP), National Foreign Language Standards, ACTFL
Performance Guidelines and ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and was developed by members of the National Council of
State Supervisors For Languages (NCSSFL). It is aligned to the current Standard Course of Study, which includes the
World Language Essential Standards and the English Language Development Standards.
LinguaFolio® is available as PDF or Microsoft Word documents, and in online format as the e-LinguaFolio at
www.elinguafolio.org/.
LinguaFolio® consists of three parts:
1. Biography: A record of personal language learning history that helps to evaluate learning goals and reflect on
language learning and cultural experiences. This includes a series of self-assessment or ‘I can’ checklists geared
to different language learning environments: ESL, dual language/immersion, heritage language, and world
language programs.
2. Dossier: A collection of pieces of work and certificates chosen by the learner to document and illustrate
language skills, experiences and achievements. It can be used to demonstrate the individual’s language abilities
to others. In the e-LinguaFolio, files for the dossier can be uploaded next to the ‘I can’ statement(s) with which
they are associated.
3. Passport/Global Profile: An overview of experiences and ability with different languages. It can be updated
frequently and records formal qualifications, diplomas, self- assessments and summative test scores.

LinguaFolio®
Training Modules
Available Online
A series of free online training modules for LinguaFolio® have been published through the
University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Education’s LEARN NC at
http://www.learnnc.org/lp/editions/linguafolio as part of a collaborative project between the
North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and the National Council of State
Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL).
The goal of this seven module series is to provide training on LinguaFolio®, a proficiency-based
formative assessment tool for language learning, that is available to educators any time they
have access to the Internet.
The series contains seven modules:
1. What is LinguaFolio®?
2. Building your own LinguaFolio®
3. Reflective Learning and Teaching in an Autonomous Environment
4. LinguaFolio®-like Activities
5. The Importance of Interculturality
6. Assessing Language Performance
7. Implementation Timeline and Setting Goals
These modules were designed to be LinguaFolio® training for use in professional learning
communities (PLCs), district and school workshops, and on an individual basis. They can also
be combined with face-to-face LinguaFolio® training for a hybrid approach, or used to review
aspects of previous LinguaFolio® training.
Information is included about how contact hours for CEUs can be documented at the local
level.
