New Teacher Support: Good Luck and we’ll see you at the end
of the year….hopefully!!!
Hiring Practices: Yep, my degree in Music Education taught me
all I need to know about hiring Chemistry and Calculus people!!
Scheduling: Hey, it worked last year…(for the most part!)
School Traditions/Practices: Why are we still doing this?

Plan for success!
 District-Wide pacing guides are nice.
 School/Departmental guides are even better. These can be




tailor made to your school but still align with the district.
Regular scheduled assessments, formative and summative,
based on guides
Vertical planning within the school and departments
Match student needs to teacher strengths as much as possible
Frequent meeting among departments to monitor progress
and adjust as necessary
Check Yourself

objectives/Common Core element were checked.
How did the class do on each objective?
What questions/assessment tool showed the most success?
Why?
Which showed the least success? Why?
Were there any questions missed by the majority of the
classes? Why?
What are you going to do to fix the issues?
Plan for Student
Success
 Individualized Student Success Plans that address areas of

weakness. Make them unique to the students, not just a
boilerplate document.
Student plans to help high achieving students grow even
more. Too often we overlook these kids because we think,
“Oh, they’ll get it on their own.” - Not Always the Case.

The Principal is
a Conductor and
Jazz Musician
 You, the conductor, knows the what the music should sound
like in the end, each of the parts and how they fit to create
the composition.
 Can you play every part…NO. You do, however, critique,
confirm, or assist with the best and most effective
performance.
 Make sure you recognize the musicians. They are the ones
actually playing the music, you’re just waving your arms!
 When something does not work, you have to improvise like a
jazz musician. Make is fit the melody and sound good!!
Set a simple but
powerful vision and stick to it!
