Implementing Change is a Journey!

1

Anticipatory Set

Think about a successful initiative that you have experienced.

What were positive aspects of that implementation?

2

Anticipatory Set

Think about a ineffective initiative that you have experienced.

What were negative aspects of that implementation?

3

Implementation:

What does it mean?

• Execution

• Completion

• Accomplishment

• Realization

• Achievement

• Performance

4

Starting with the "end" in mind

The fundamental goal for any educational practice is the development of students who are competent in academics and social skills.

(Steve Goodman & Beth A Steenwyk)

5

How can we ensure that we accomplish that goal?

I MPLEMENTATION CAPACITY – the ability to establish multi-level systems and supports that help educators, administrators, and policy makers select, use, improve, and sustain effective intervention practices.

7

Importance of an Implementation

Team

Understand the change so that they can help stakeholders choose wisely, evaluate the readiness to implement, and assess the implementation capacity of the district in relationship to a number of factors related to the innovation.

8

Importance of an Implementation

Team

Fidelity – the degree to which the program or practice is implemented “as intended” as defined by the program developers/researchers or experts.

9

What initiative are you planning to implement?

Do you have a team in place to lead the initiative?

How was the team selected?

What training and support will be on-going for the team?

What opportunities do they have to talk regularly?

CAUTION!

Students cannot benefit from interventions they do not experience

• Teachers and staff have to change if students are to benefit

Fixsen, (2010)

13

• Even when we adopt good science to help students

Implementation Gap

What is adopted is not used with fidelity and good outcomes

What is used with fidelity is not sustained for a useful period of time.

What is used with fidelity is not used on a scale sufficient to impact social problems.

Fixsen (2010)

14

Four important things for you to know

(and do) to improve student outcomes

• Use implementation science

• Support implementation practices

• Change organizations/ systems

• Be adaptive
