All art classes satisfy the Arts Core Requirement.
Art Major/Minor students are encouraged to take a variety of courses from different art department
instructors. ARTST 110 Basic Design, ARTST 119 Intro to Digital Imaging, and ARTST 210
Drawing I are considered the Foundation courses and should be taken no later than the end of the
sophomore year for students intending to be Studio Art Majors. To successfully complete the
program, the Studio Major should be declared by the end of the sophomore year. By the spring of the
junior year, students are expected to declare an area of concentration. The areas of concentration are
Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Book Arts, Photography, Sculpture, Metals/Jewelry, Ceramics, and
Stained Glass. Students interested in creating a mixed media or interdisciplinary concentration may
do so with departmental approval.
An area of concentration is established when 12 credits have been taken in a specific art medium.
Four credits must be at the 300 level. Some areas of concentration will require repeating a course at
the 300 level in order to achieve the required number of credits. A concentration in Photography will
require 14 credits because of the number of two credit courses in that specialty. Production I and II
are not counted toward the concentration credits.
Students are mentored through the capstone experience by his or her Capstone Advisory Committee.
The purpose of the three-faculty committee is to help students to develop their concepts, to solve
technical issues, to maintain appropriate craftsmanship and to suggest presentation possibilities for
their work in preparation for the thesis exhibition. All Studio Art Majors are required to present a
well-developed, original body of work in the gallery, give a presentation during Senior Project Day,
and submit a final digital portfolio.
Studio Art Majors must take ARTST 390 Studio Art Seminar: Concepts in Art in the spring of the
junior year, and ARTST 496 Exhibition Techniques in the spring of the senior year. ARTST 492 and
493 (Studio Production I and II) are the capstone course required in the senior year. All students must
maintain a 3.0 average with no class below a C- in the major.
If you have any questions about art classes and/or requirements, please contact an Art Department
faculty member.
