Complete and answer the following: 1. On which continent are these countries found? 2. In geographic terms, why would Kosovo and Bosnia be included in the same unit? 3. How large are these countries in contrast to their neighbors? Answer this not just in numbers, but also as a general comparison of big or small and explain in terms of comparative size. 4. List the surrounding countries. 5. Describe some of the major geographic features of these countries. Include items like: a. Major roadways, and other forms of transportation b. Important water resources such as rivers, lakes and oceans c. Significant mountain ranges or other ways that populations are isolated d. Large deserts, rainforests or other biomes that may influence how and where populations live. 6. How do you think geography plays a part in the refugee situation in these countries? Be sure to cite your online sources where you gathered this information. - Sample complete answers: - These countries are found in south eastern Europe. These countries can be included in the same unit because the location of Bosnia, Kosovo and their surrounding countries all are grouped together on a large section of land, surrounded by water on 3 sides. Kosovo and Bosnia are smaller sized compared to their neighbors. Romania is a giant compared to these countries about twice their size, Bosnia is about medium sized compared to Kosovo, so Bosnia would probably be about medium sized. The surrounding countries are Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Hungry, Romania, Bulgaria. Kosovo is very mountainous with highways cutting the country into sections almost, most flat land is covered with faming fields. Bosnia is also very rugged with mountains and rivers are long and separate the country into large chunks. The mountains are mainly centralized in the center of the country and the land flattens out into hills at the edges. Refugees are probably most numerous in the flat areas, or along river banks were large camps can be set up, the mountains are probably to harsh of weather for refugees to thrive. - Bosnia and Kosovo are located in Europe. Both countries would be considered in the same geographic terms because, they have very similar geographies due to their close proximity. These countries are relatively small in comparison to the countries surrounding them. Bosnia is located close to the ocean so it has a massive water trade and transportation. Kosovo on the other hand is surrounded by land and other countries so its main way of transportation is roads and it does have an airport. Both countries have numerous rivers through them which is essential for water and transportation. Both countries have mountains that isolates a bunch of the people of the countries. The biomes of both countries are very unforgiving but, obviously the people have learned how to deal with this. These conditions obviously make it very hard for an unequipped refugee to escape and survive this ethnic cleansing. Furthermore, because of all of the factors stated previously; transportation, environment, and geography the likelihood of any survivor from an ethnic cleansing raid is very small. The refugee camp is also going to be very poor in its status since, it can’t be near the water because, they would be attacked by the people committing the ethnic cleansing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosovo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosnia Ethnic Cleansing – 5 pts Research the topic of ethnic cleansing as a general topic and then find information about at least one other example in another country. Answer the following questions: 1. What is it? 2. What are the reasons given for cleansing? 3. What affect does it have on the country? 4. What affect does it have on those who are being scapegoated? 5. What affect does it have on the rest of the citizens in the country? 6. Compare the Bosnian crisis to other ethnic cleansings, how are they similar and different? Cite your sources. - Sample student answer: o Ethnic cleansing is a process in where a group of people wish to eradicate another ethnicity. The reason can be any and it is not an isolated event it has happened all through history and is caused when one ethnicity doesn’t understand the other. The reasons for cleansing another race is usually the thought that the other race is inferior and doesn’t have the right to be alive and using the resources. This divides the country and creates a constant war between people and ultimately ruins the countries economics when the focus is on war as opposed to country. The people who are being used as a scapegoat are at the losing end of this because, they are being focused on for the poor economic conditions and that leads to the ethnic cleansing of these people. The rest of the citizens of the country are left simply in fear. That is because, they may be the next witch in this Salem Witch Trial-esk problem. Bosnian ethnic cleansing is simply on its own people in comparison to the ethnic cleansing done by Hitler, who wanted to kill all who did not meet his standards, essentially, the Bosnian problem isn’t the same degree. Every life, however, is precious and everyone deserves to live so, for that reason, and that reason alone, the ethnic cleansing that is occurring is an abomination to human kind. Unit Afghanistan and Iraq Geo Afg Iraq – 12pts Graded Online Quiz Resource Conf – 10pts Write 3 - 4 paragraphs. Recent internal conflicts in Iraq are based on religious and political strife. However, resource issues have added to the problem. Research the country of Iraq and in paragraph form answer the following questions: 1. What resource is in contention? 2. Why? 3. With whom? 4. How has this affected the country? 5. What has been the affect on the refugee situation? - Sample student answer: Recent internal conflicts in Iraq are based on religious and political strife. However, resource issues have added to the problem. In Iraq there are not many natural resources to begin with, simply because of the land’s geography and everything in it. Although there is one resource that it has that has been in constant contention ever since the knowledge of its existence was acquired. This resource is, of coarse, oil. Its ownership has been sought out and fought over for quite a few years now, and along with the other internal problems and conflicts that face Iraq (religious and political issues) it almost seems as though this valuable resource would be the straw that breaks the camels back. Simply because of the stateownership and state-management of Iraq’s oil, most neighboring countries in the Middle East argue that it is not conducive to democracy on their part and is inconsistent with the principles of free market. This issue has affected the state in one huge way: it is the heart of the crisis that leads toward a United States war against Iraq, and is ripping apart its cohesive history of its inhabitants more successfully than the religious and political strife as stated earlier. With all of this, the refugee situation in Iraq has been affected tremendously by the oil situation. Some experts reason that refugees within Iraq’s borders could fuel complete regional instability, and because oil revenues are higher than ever before since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, it will affect them psychologically. How far do you have to travel? What do you see along the way? Be sure to cite your online sources where you gathered this information – student must tell an interesting and accurate story of the geographic route used to flee – sample student answer: I awoke suddenly, there was a loud rapid firing of machine guns and jeeps and truck tracking about outside. I darted out of the house, holding my sister close to me. what was happening? Who were these people, why are they doing this? My sister began to cry for mother. Where was she? I darted behind the house ad bullets splintered the wood support beams of our home. Screams and cries where everywhere. My sister and I knelt down on the side of our house. There was a woman laying on the ground bleeding, it was our neighbor. She was on her back coughing up blood. She looked up at us, in her eyes telling us to run. My sister began to sob softly. One of the men with guns came walked to her, standing over her. He smirked and pushed his gun to her face. I held my, sister, and began to back up slowly. I turned away. But I still heard those shots. It was horrific. I looked at my sister, her eyes where wide open, she was beginning to breath heavly, tears filled her eyes. She saw the whole thing. She started to cry. A strong arm grabbed my shouder. The man pulled my sister and me behind the house. It was my dad. He rabbed our hands and ran towards the trees. The three of us knelt in the grass. Dad told us to run, to follow the river until we reached Kenema, we couldn’t follow the roads or those people would find us. It was over twenty miles away. We had to leav our village, Maloma. More men came running down the hill. My father stood there with his hands in the air. I stopped and hid, watching, my sister cleanched my arm. The men walked up to my father, they talked for a while, I prayed they would leave him alone. Then, several of the men held him so his arms where streatched out. One of the men pulled out a machete and swung at his elbows. My father cried out in pain. My eyes filled with tears, I didn’t understand, why were they doing this to us? I stood in panick, grabbed my sister, threw her on my back and ran as fast as I could. The last thing we heard was a single gunshot. My sister said nothing for the rest of our journey. The journey west was taking longer than I had though, it was much harder since my sister was little and wasn’t strong enough to do it by herself. A lot of the way, I had to carry her on my back. I tried my best to confert her and reasure her, but she never said anything. Sometimes at night when we tried to sleep she would just cry to herself. I wanted to cry too, but I had to be an example to her. The terrain in consistant, it was hard to stick to the river because a lot of the way was densely packed with trees and other plants. What we struggled most with for was getting food. We had problems untill some other refugees came traveling our direction. There where dozens of them. They were able to make sure that my sister and I made it the rest of the way safely. When we got there, we where put into a special camp where injured people go, we stayed there untill our grandmother found us and took us to where she lived. I don’t know we are safe here. And I’m scared, for the rest of my family. http://www.theirc.org/resources/2007/irc-sierra-leone-fact-sheet.pdf http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Liberia&utm_campaign=en&utm_medium=ha&utm_source= en-ha-na-us-sk-gm&utm_term=liberia%20map Current Liberia – 10 pts Go to the All Africa website. Unit Congo and Sudan Geo Con Sud – 10pts Assume that you are living in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo when fighting breaks out in Zambia. The violence is spilling over the borders and armed troops are descending on your village, burning and looting. You have to flee. You have family in Atbara, Sudan that will take you in, if you can make it there. Surrounding nations will not let you cross their borders, but you have a pass to go into Sudan, however it's only validated for the border town of Aba. All flights are closed, but you will be able to use a car or public transportation (if you can get it.) Your grandfather, who lives in Al Fashir, Sudan, is offering you some funds, but doesn't want to risk mailing money. You'll have to go to him directly. Describe your journey. You can also include a map to help tell your story, but you will have to fully describe what it's like on the way. You will need a couple of paragraphs of writing to fully describe what you see. Be sure to cite your online sources where you gathered this information. -Sample student submission: Two months after living in Lumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, word ran through the city one day that fighting had broken out in Zambia. Violence was spilling over the borders and armed troops were descending rapidly on the surrounding villages, burning and looting everything in sight. The only option I had for my life was to flee as quickly as possible. Knowing that my family in Atbara, Sudan would take me in, that was my destination after grabbing the few belongings I possessed and throwing them into my old Honda. It was common knowledge that all of the surrounding states of the Congo wouldn’t let anyone pass through, however I had a pass through Sudan. Unfortunately, it was only validated for the border town of Aba. All incoming and outgoing flights in the area were closed, so my only hope was to drive my beat-up 87 civic all the way to Atbara. Knowing I had very little money, my grandfather offered to help me out with some, but didn’t want to risk mailing it to me in case of interception of someone else, so to get it I had to travel to his home town Al Fashir in Sudan to get it directly. The journey I undertook was not only extremely dangerous and treacherous, and took its toll on me. Soon after departing from Lumbashi and heading north on N5, it became very obvious of what was soon to come of what used to be my new home. Hummers and military trucks were everywhere, the drivers of which were armed with machine guns and carrying on inside them with bottles of liquor that they had undoubtedly stolen from other towns, heading straight to where I had just left. After several hours of driving, Lake Mweru was visible, and I soon realized that the long road to safety had just begun. Finally, after driving through heavily-wooded jungle roads for a few days, the landscape began to change as I neared Sudan. The desert-plains and grasslands of the safe country where filled with people trying to escape just as I had done, swarming over the boarder. After passing through Aba with my pass, and safely in Sudan, I realized how short of money I was becoming. I put the last of my money in the gas tank and reached my grandfather’s house with hardly and eighth of a tank to spare. After resting and eating a day at his house, I proceeded north-east for a day to the safety and security of my family in Atbara. http://maps.google.com/maps?sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=Lubumbashi,+Democratic+Rep ublic+of+the+Congo&um=1&ie=UTF8&split=0&gl=us&ei=IrhLSvTmEpWIMZC7kLAC&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&re snum=1 Darfur – 5pts The Darfur region has had outbreaks of violence for years. Research the refugee problems in the Darfur region of Sudan. Answer the following: Considering the video you watched of the refugee woman and your research into current refugee issues, what advice would you give the woman who is considering returning home? What are her advantages and disadvantages of staying or going? Be sure to include supporting evidence and cite all of your sources. - Sample student answer: The advice that I would give to the woman who is considering going home in the video is that she should do what she things is best for her and her family. Simply because she has been in the camp for so long, dependency on the aid that other organizations have given her is one thing that she must know that she will have to overcome. If she is not ready to do so, then leaving is probably not a good idea for her quite yet. However, sooner or later the camp will end up closing down, and aid will stop coming. Because of this she must know and realize that she will have to move somewhere where she can use the salon skills that she was taught to support her family. Because of the fact that one of her daughters was taken from her and she cannot go to the area where she is, she might have to settle on moving to a place close to where she was before instead of the exact location. Many of the refugees that were living in the same camp have already left, and she will have to sooner or later as well. http://vhs.psdschools.org/courses/1/2Humanities_PTC/content/_262907_1/dir_Congo_1.zip/ind ex.html Additional Factors Economic Freedom – 15pts Create an Economic Freedoms Chart and answer questions from your chart. Key words for your seach might include: Charity, Philanthropy, Fraud Two good sites for this topic are: The American Institute of Philanthropy http://www.charitywatch.org/ Forbes http://www.forbes.com/ Answer the following questions: 1. What are some of the things you should look for/consider before donating? 2. List three organizations that effectively give aid to refugees. 3. Find and list the websites for each of the three organizations you selected. 4. Look at the information on each of the websites. Select one of the three organizations that you feel is more deserving/effective than the other two. Explain why you selected that organization. Use supporting evidence from your research. What’s the same? – 10pts Go back and look at the conflicts in each of the countries you studied in this course. Research the politics/governments that lead to refugee situations. What is the common thread? What elements do they share in common? Why don't these systems work? What needs to change to help the refugees? Note: This is a charged question. There is no right or wrong answer and just saying 'democracy is the best' isn't an answer. You need to support your answer with evidence, and also consider that no political system works perfectly. - Sample student submission: The most common thread between all the countries and their massive disputes is either economics or culture. Culture is the biggest one, with a world of changing times culture is often changed and some people can’t handle that. As a result, they lash out and fight for their tradition. The countries government systems are ruled by old cultural forms. This poses a problem when culture starts to change. A lot of the cultures belittle women and with the rise of women rights that causes uproar. The political system once again falters when the culture changes. To help the refugees the political system has to change to the rapidly moving world. That would require a new mind set, which ultimately is impossible to change everyone’s minds. The best method of attack would be through educating the youth and changing their minds about culture. Health Crisis – 10pts ASSIGN: Health Crisis Recent fighting has broken out in central Africa and people are fleeing. As a health care worker for the United Nations, you have been sent to a border town and given the task of preparing for the arrival of an expected 1,500 refugees over the next three days. Research some of the specific health care concerns of refugees. Create, either with graphics, descriptive writing or charts, how you will design this refugee camp in terms of meeting basic health care conditions. What will be the problems? What primary concerns must be met immediately? What can you offer? How will you stretch limited resources? Offer supporting evidence from your reading and research. Please cite all sources. Useful sites to begin research: Refugee Health - Immigrant Health National Center For Infectious Diseases - Division of Global Migration and Quarantine -Sample student answer: http://www.americares.org/newsroom/news/pakistan-refugee-health-issues-concerns.html I think that some big problems this camp would have to take care of is disposing of human waste, having enough doctors to tend to sick and wounded people and overall, just having enough supplies to go around. Something like this would have to be planned in advance, allot of clean water would have to be accumulated in an area where there probably is none. Somehow, the UN would have to arrange transportation for supplies and equipment. A series of large tents or buildings would have to be built in order for this to happen. Preparation I don’t think they would have much time for. The first thing to start working on when refugees start arriving is immediately starting operations on refugees who have been shot up or otherwise injured. People need to be tending to children, who have been exposed to heat and the elements for probably several days. People will have to keep people, especially children, from getting dehydrated. The camp can offer shelter ad medical care until these people are healthy again, however, the people will have to rely on another camp for a temporary home. Perhaps a refugee camp could be placed adjacent to the medical camp. The camp can offer professional surgery, and will also allow people to recover from post traumatic stress disorder. I think it could possibly help stop the spreading of diseases a bit if things were played out right. For something like this, supplies would have to be stocked up in advance, other wise, they would be more limited, and just wouldn’t go far enough to care for everyone. Conclusion Unit Refugee Experience – 20pts Note: This assignment will be complete throughout this course and submitted in your Conclusion Unit.) Select any three of the refugee stories that you think are the most interesting and begin charting their lives. You will then compare their lives to your own. You may use the attached file to help with this assignment. -Sample student submission: Muhidden Abu from Somalia As a young child, Muhidden’s family whitnessed a lot of violence. Lots of young children were killed in the streets. Muhidden was responsible for looking after some of the younger children. Muhidden grew up with 8 brothers and 4 sisters. His family was lucky enough to not starve. Many people in his community were dying of starvation. When Muhidden was about seven, rebels came to the door asking for tires. Muhidden slammed the door in their face. The rebels fired shots through the door, killing his brother and nearly glancing one of the younger children. After the incident, his family left and moved to Kenya. They rented a nice apartment, and lived there for a year. Then his family moved to a refugee camp, they lived there for 8 years. John Makol from Sudan As a young boy, John was forced to flee his village. It was attacked by a group of militia. Many people died right in front of him. In the chaos, John was separated from his parents, who were unable to escape. John was able to find his uncle. They fled together with a large group of refugees. Many people began to starve. People had to eat the leaves off of trees just to stay alive. People who were too weak or sick fell behind and were killed by wild animals. John and his uncle reached safety in Ethiopia. They lived together there, until civil war broke out again. Today, John lives in the United States. John is treated badly by other people, because he is different from every one else. Shaima Abdul from Afghanistan When she was young, the Taliban came to Shaima’s town. They started closing schools and hospitals. For a month, everyone had to stay inside their homes. The family ended up digging a hole in the wall to connect their house to their neighbors. One night Shaima’s father was beaten and arrested by members of the Taliban. Shaima’s mother tried to bail him out, but the Taliban said she didn’t have enough money. Eventually, they stopped getting letters from the father, and after six months, they left to Pakistan. In Pakistan, the entire family had to work all day. Shaima had to work by weaving rugs, working from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m., getting paid 200$ every two months. Looking at these stories really made me realize that I have a lot of things that I take for granted. I have plenty of food to eat, I always have clothes to wear, I have a nice place to sleep, and a home to live in. I have never had to have fear for my life because a group of rebels are out to kill me, I have never had to flee my home, and I have never had to experience starvation. I also haven’t see any of my friends and neighbors die in the streets, I haven’t had to watch members of my family die. I have always had the opportunity to receive medical care if I get really sick or hurt. I also go to school everyday, and I don’t have to work to earn money for my family. When I am at school or with my friends, I don’t worry about being discriminated because of my race or skin color. Compared to me, these people have had to live with virtually nothing, and have been in situations where their goal is to just stay alive. They have all had a fear of losing their lives. Almost all of these refugees have watched friends or family die in civil violence. All of these people know what it is like to have to leave everything you have, not knowing what will happen. Compared to these brave teenagers, my life has been really cushy and easy. Correlations – 20pts 1. Either using a map, or with clear and accurate descriptions, show where most of the creation of refugees of the world is occurring. 3. Either using a map, or with clear and accurate descriptions, show where most of the poverty of the world is occurring. 4. Write a 2 - 3 paragraph description of the correlation between all of the maps. In your own words explain why you think we see these trends in all of the maps. Make certain that you use supporting evidence from this class - Sample student submission: http://www.theodora.com/maps/new9/poverty_map_transparent.gif http://www.global-neighborhood.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/world-map-refugeemuch of the civil violence that occurs in the world today occurs in parts of southern Africa and in northwest Africa. A lot of civil strife takes place in the middle east. Also, there are many terrorist groups in parts of Asia, especially near India. There is also a fair amount of violence in Latin America and in south America. The similarities between the maps are crazy. All of the areas that suffer from poverty also suffer from violence and have problems with people fleeing their home. It is interesting how they are all dependent or variables upon each other. These countries have been caught in a vicious cycle. The countries with weaker governments and economies are more likely to have problems with civil war and terrorism, causing people to flee. This pushes the country into even deeper depression I some cases. Things can easily get worse once things start to slide.
