1. Subphylum Crustacea

• only group of arthropods that is primarily aquatic

• examples: crayfish,lobster,shrimp, barnacles, isopods (pill bugs), crabs (not horseshoe)

Body Structure:

•2 pairs of antennae

•carapace: Cuticle of head extends posteriorly and around sides

(Cephalothorax)

(exoskeleton = CaCO 3 calcium carbonate)

•Appendages:

1.Swimmerets: small abdominal legs

2.Cheliped: 1 st pair of walking legs; has pinching claw Deep Water Shrimp

3.Uropod: last pair; acts as rudder, jet backwards very fast!

• Respiration: Gills

• Excretion: Green glands

A. Class: Chilopoda Centipedes-

• Long body with many segments (flattened)

• First segment has claws

• Claws inject poison into prey

(predators!)

• *One pair of legs per segment!

• Carnivorous

B. Class Diplopoda

Millipedes-

• * Exude noxious chemicals

(defense)

• Long body with many segments

(cylindrical)

• No poison claws:

• TWO pairs of legs per segment

•Herbivores, detritivores (eat garbage)

• * Eat dead plant material
