Pre-doctoral grant within the Doctorate programme of Marine Sciences and Technologies University of Cantabria (Santander, Spain) European Project TRANSFER (Tsunami Risk ANd Strategies For the European Region Call: Sixth Framework Project FP6-2005-Global-4) 1. Description of the TRANSFER project The main objectives of the TRANSFER project are: (1) contribute to the understanding of the processes associated with tsunamis in the European Atlantic and Mediterranean area; (2) hazard assessment related with tsunamis in this region; (3) elaborate flood, vulnerability and risk maps for some specific locations, and finally (4) identify the best strategies necessary to reduce the risks associated with tsunamis in Europe. Over 30 institutions participate in this programme including research centres, European universities and governmental institutions. Focus will be placed on the gaps and needs for the implementation of an efficient tsunami early warning system (TEWS) in the Euro-Atlantic-Mediterranean area, a high-priority task considering that no tsunami early warning system is in place today in the Euro-Mediterranean countries. 1. Job Description Modification of numerical models and new developments associated to the propagation of tsunamis Application of the numerical models to the Spanish coasts combined with probabilistic methods. Processing of numerical and bathymetric data sets Creation of flood, vulnerability and risk maps. Attendance to European technical meetings Writing technical papers and reports in English. 2. Candidate Requirements The candidate must have an Engineering or Graduate degree with knowledge of: Numerical models Programming in Fortran and Matlab High level of knowledge in physics (hydrodynamics) Data processing Excellent level of English (Spoken and written) and mathematics Personal initiative and management skills are highly valued as well as the ability to work as a team. 3. Duration of the grant, and placement The project takes place over a 30 month time period beginning on the 1st of October 2006.
