It is an equation made up of MONOMIALS (mono meaning ONE real number, variable, or a product of each). Each TERM of a polynomial is called a monomial. A polynomial made up of one term is a MONOMIAL. Ex: 4x2 A polynomial made up of two terms is a BINOMIAL. Ex: 4x + 7 Anything more than two terms simply has the name POLYNOMIAL. Jan 26:33 PM 3 61 Polynomial Functions January 06, 2009 The largest exponent of any term is the DEGREE of the polynomial. This polynomial is in STANDARD FORM since their terms are in descending order by degree. Jan 26:33 PM 4 61 Polynomial Functions January 06, 2009 You can classify a polynomial by: ~the number of terms it contains ~its degree Jan 26:58 PM 5 61 Polynomial Functions January 06, 2009 Write each polynomial in standard form. Then classify it by degree and by number of terms. 1. 7x + 5x4 2. x2 4x + 3x3 + 2x 3. 4x 6x + 5 4. 3x3 + x2 4x + 2x3 5. 6 2x5 Jan 27:02 PM 6 61 Polynomial Functions January 06, 2009 HOMEWORK p. 309 #112 all, 34 58 even Jan 26:33 PM 7
