Participatory Assessment of Disaster Risk (PADR)
Malawi
When completing a PADR process with one of Tearfund partner Eagle’s DRR funded
communities, the issue of HIV/AIDS ranked highly as vulnerability. Subsequently,
Eagles mobilised another source of funding and carried out a voluntary HIV/AIDS
counselling and testing mobile campaign in three villages with 400 households. Out
of 400 members, 230 went for testing and counselling representing a 57%
participation in three days. Miss Chrissie Ngoma, an HIV/AIDS counsellor from
Chikwawa district hospital had this to say: “I am surprised, during the World
HIV/AIDS week only 28 people from this centre came for testing, and now to see so
many people queuing as if they are about to receive relief food is amazing.” Eagles
were encouraged at the high level of mobilization and trust that the project has built
in the community through the PADR process.
