Interest Discovery

Interest Discovery
Discovering our interests can be done by understanding how we spend our time, what we dream about, and creating
hypothetical situations for us to explore how we might proceed. Take a moment to answer the questions below to understand
what patterns, themes, and ideas are generated. Work with a Career Services team member to identify common themes that
might connect with academic majors and career paths.
If you had $1,000,000 to start 3 businesses, what kinds of businesses would they be?
If you could teach ANY course at any level, what subjects would you teach?
If you could invite 5 people (living or dead) to dinner, who would they be and why?
Other questions to ask yourself:
What subjects do you normally talk to friends about?
What classes or subjects fascinate or absorb you?
What are your favorite hobbies or activities?
What do you watch on TV or look at on the internet?
What to do next:
Check out www.onetcenter.org for an advanced search of careers based on groups of interests.
This will help you generate an idea of career paths and work environments that might interest you.
Take this with you to a University Career Center team member for further conversation.
