Internship in Public Affairs (POLS602)
POLS 602: Internship in Public Affairs – Prerequisite18 semester hours with a GPA of 3.0 or
above. Individual Faculty members supervise internships in conjunction with the department
chair. May be taken from 1 - 3 s.h., repeatable to a maximum of 6 s.h.

PROTOCOL
Students are assigned to work sites by department chair or individual graduate faculty
member. Chair oversees student grade, but individual faculty members often responsible
for providing grade for students they advise, in a fashion similar to independent study
courses.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
A. Student must be political science major.
B. Minimum GPA = 3.0.
C. Students are allowed to apply up to six credit hours to major.

REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

Students register for course with approval of department chair. Chair or faculty
member supervising internship coordinates with site supervisor to confirm
parameters of internship. (Most graduate students who take this course are in
Peace Corps Fellows program through Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs, which
helps with placement).
STUDENT INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITY: It is the responsibility of the internship
student to complete all of the requirements listed below and submit materials to the University
Internship Supervisor.
A. Student is responsible for submitting:
1. Journal describing activities and number of hours worked for each day of internship.
2. Term paper (typically 15-20 pages for three hours credit).

ON-SITE SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY:
A. Provide written evaluation of intern.
B. Confirm clock hours. (150 hours = 3 hours of credit).
7.
UNIVERSITY COORDINATOR RESPONSIBILITY:
A. Supervise student directly and coordinate evaluation procedures with site supervisor, or work
with faculty assigned to supervise internship.
B. Assign letter grade at completion of evaluation.
