You may think that it’s easier to skip a meal than take the time to eat one. The problem with meal skipping is that it can make you less productive. Studies have shown that meal skipping often leads to less concentration, lower energy levels and possibly decreased problem-solving skills, all of which are essential for doing well on exams and presentations. Sometimes students are tempted to skip meals because they think it will help with weight loss, but actually it often leads to overeating on snacks or at the next meal because of being overly hungry. In the long run, meal skipping is more likely to lead to weight gain than loss. This is another reason to keep your meals regular. Take time to sit down and eat your meals rather than grabbing them on the go. Your body will appreciate the break and your mind will feel refreshed and ready to concentrate again. When you eat, have a balanced meal with whole grains, fruits and vegetables, moderate amounts of lean protein and low fat dairy foods. Grabbing something quick from a vending machine won’t give you the nutrients that you’ll get from the balanced meal, and it will probably be a high calorie choice. Here are some ideas for quick and healthy meals: Have a “To Go” deli sandwich with an apple and a serving of milk. Or choose a salad from the salad bar with some tuna or turkey added for protein, and low fat salad dressing. Or have a grilled chicken breast on a whole wheat bun with baby carrots and fresh fruit. Some people turn to food when they feel stressed about exams, projects and deadlines. If you frequently grab candy or a bag of chips from the vending machine to snack on when you’re feeling stressed, this can result in overeating, excess calories and unwanted weight gain. Instead of giving in to stress and turning to food, think of other activities that you could do as a stress reliever. Here are some ideas to get you started: Take a 10-minute break from studying and • Walk around the block • Put on some music and move to the beat to relax • Take a bubble bath • Look at a magazine • Have a healthy snack, but don’t let yourself get out of control. See healthy snack choices below. What should I have for a snack when I’m up studying late at night and get hungry? First of all, make sure you’re hungry. Late-night munchies can be a habit or something to do because you’re tired of studying. So ask yourself if you feel hungry – if you are hungry, having a healthy snack can help curb your hunger and get you thru your studying session. Contrary to popular myths, late-night calories are no more likely to cause weight gain than calories eaten at another time of day. Some problems with late-night eating are lack of selfcontrol and choosing foods that are high in fat and sugar. Keep yourself in control by taking a reasonable portion of the snack food and eating that without going back for more. To do this, take a serving out of the bag or box and put it into a bowl, then put the container away so you won’t be tempted to go back for more later. Take a break from studying to eat your snack, rather than eating in front of your computer or while you’re reading your text book. You’ll be more aware of how much you’re eating and you’ll also enjoy it more. If your typical late-night snack foods are candy, chips, pizza and ice cream try some healthier choices instead: » Light yogurt » Whole grain crackers » String cheese » Apple with peanut butter » Pretzels » Pudding cup » Fudgesicle » Raisins or dried fruit » Graham crackers » Tomato or V-8 juice » Granola bar » Animal crackers » Cereal with skim milk » Light microwave popcorn » Fresh fruit (apples, bananas, oranges, grapes, etc) » Fruit cup (peaches, pears, applesauce) » Baby carrots or other fresh vegetables » Bagel or English muffin with light cream cheese » Whole grain toast with peanut butter » Trail mix made with dried fruit and nuts » Low fat cottage cheese and fruit » Nuts – peanuts, almonds, soy nuts UNIVERSITY DINING ADVISORY COMMITTEE RECURUTIING The University Dining Service (UDS) Advisory Committee represents all students, faculty and staff working with the management of UDS to improve operations and satisfy customer needs. Decorations captured some of the glamor and glitter portrayed in the Great Gatsby as well as apparel reminiscent of the era. There were 373 diners at North Point and 980 at the Commons for a total of 1353. The menu was very popular with the most popular items being the Oven Fried Chicken, Beef Pot Roast (as good a Moms’), loaded mashed potatoes, cheese balls and carrot cake. Trivia, toss the hat, spin the wheel and even a murder mystery to solve provided engagement to learn more about the era or just have fun or wind some prizes. The biggest hit of the night was the photo booth at each location, over 700 photos were snapped, check them out here ther is an album for North Point and one for Commons: https://plus.google.com/photos/111434361864129986263/albums?banner=pwa.
