2015-2016
About MCC Softball
Muskegon Community College Softball is dedicated to providing an atmosphere where student athletes
can learn and grow in the classroom, on the softball field, and in life. Jayhawk Softball is all about a “team
first” mentality and a belief that to be successful, the team is always more important than the individual. We
continuously recruit players that we think will fit with these expectations. We believe to be a great team;
each individual must first be a great person, student, and teammate. Our goal is to build our team into a
family where all of our student athletes come together to contribute to our success on and off the field.
Using these ideals, we have been able to build a very successful program with a great tradition. At MCC, we
are modeled after a Division I program. Our expectations in the classroom and on the field are very high.
One of our main goals is to move our players on to other programs where they can make an impact and
continue to succeed on and off the field. Since 2007, we have sent 43 players on to play at the next level.
We have also been fortunate to win Conference, State, and Regional championships as well as a National
Championship in 2010. We also made another trip back to the national tournament in 2012, finishing 7th
in the nation. Throughout the years, our players have received several awards including All Conference, All
District, All Region, and All American honors. Our coaching staff has also been honored. We received the
2010 Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year, the 2012 N.F.C.A. Division II East Regional Coaching Staff
of the Year, and the 2014 MCCAA Western Conference Coach of the Year Award.

Head Coach
Ryan Schalk Coach Schalk is starting his third season as the head
coach of the Jayhawks and eighth season with the program. He brings a two year
record of 53-35 into the season. The Jayhawks finished in fourth place in the MCCAA
Western Conference for the 2015 season.
Coach Schalk was born and raised in Muskegon, MI. He graduated from Oakridge
High School in 2005 where he played both basketball and baseball. Coach Schalk
went on to receive an Associate’s Degree from Muskegon Community College in
2008 and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Grand Valley State University in
2015.
Before taking over the head softball coaching position, he served as an assistant
coach for five years with the Jayhawks. In that time, the program received several
honors and awards highlighted by winning the NJCAA National Championship in
2010. Other honors and awards during that time period included the 2010 Division
II National Coaching Staff of the Year and the 2012 Division II East Coaching Staff of
the Year. During this time, the Jayhawks also produced 10 All-Americans.
In his first year at the helm of the program Schalk was named the 2014 MCCAA
Western Conference Coach of the Year. The 2015 season brought several conference
leading statistics and program records as well as several honors and awards. The
Jayhawks finished in fourth place in the MCCAA Western Conference while leading
the entire MCCAA in runs (402), hits (504), triples (19), RBI (317), and stolen bases
(124). They also finished second in home runs (46) and top five in batting average
(.351) and doubles (79). The .351 team batting average and 46 Home Runs are both
also program records. The 2015 season also produced three All-Americans on the field and an MCCAA All-Academic team
in the classroom. All together in the eight years with the program, Coach Schalk has helped 40 players move on to play at the
next level.
Coach Schalk has also been involved in many aspects of softball throughout the years. He currently serves as an instructor
for Michigan Blue Chip Softball Camps, the Director of Operations for the Lakeshore Summer Softball Camp, and the Head
of Fastpitch Softball at Softball World in Muskegon, MI. In addition to coaching softball, he served as an Assistant Girls Varsity
Basketball Coach at Reeths-Puffer High School and the Head JV Girls Basketball Coach as well.
When asked about the program at Muskegon Community College, Coach Schalk says, “Our program is all about building a
family and learning tough life lessons through the game of softball. Five years from now, no one is going to remember the wins
and losses or the things they learned about the game. What they will remember are the life lessons and the great experiences
they had playing alongside their teammates for the two years they had here.”
When asked about the 2016 Jayhawks, Coach Schalk says, “This is one of the most athletic and well-rounded teams we have
ever had. We have several players that can play multiple positions as well as great depth in our pitching staff.” “We also
have a great balance of power and speed that will help us win a lot of games this year.” “Our biggest strength this year is
our leadership from our sophomore class, including our three captains. They have a year of experience under their belt and
they are ready to compete every single day and do the things it takes to have a successful season.” “We also return two AllAmericans for the first time ever. Our top two pitchers returning from last year and two solid freshmen coming in should
make for a complete pitching staff.” “Offensively, we are tough to get out 1 through 9 and have several players that can come
in off the bench at any time as well.” “Our goal is the same as it is every year, which is to bring another National Championship
back to Muskegon Community College.”
