Sexuality, Women and Gender.*
Studies in Sexuality, Women, and Gender is an interdisciplinary and multicultural
program of study that engages in research and exploration concerning all areas of
women’s and men’s experiences. Its unique perspective strengthens the abilities of
students within any major to critically analyze theory and research emphasizing the
importance of gender and sexuality while including other key categories of analysis
such as race, class, ethnicity, ability, and nationality. This program is offered under the
jurisdiction and general supervision of the Deans of the Colleges of Social and
Behavioral Sciences and Humanities, Arts, and Sciences. For more information, contact
the Women's and Gender Studies office, Sabin 225, 319-273-7102,

BRIEF NARRATIVE EXPLAINING WHAT YOU ARE HOPING TO ACCOMPLISH WITH YOUR
CURRICULAR CHANGES, identifying the relationship of the proposed changes to other planning
processes (i.e., Academic Program Review, Student Outcomes Assessment, strategic planning, and
licensure or accreditation/re-accreditation requirements). Explain how you know these changes are needed,
based on those planning processes. (e.g., Based on what we learned through assessing our _____ learning
goal for the major, showing that we needed more emphasis on _______, we are restating the major to add
some possible electives and change the required core from 9 to 12 credits with the addition of a newly
created core course.)
In keeping with greater campus support and resources for LGBTQ students and allies,
via the new LGBT* Center and other initiatives, this academic year 2014-2015 we
piloted an experimental course in LGBTQ Studies. Due to the success of this course,
which ran as an overenrolled course Fall 2014 and as an overenrolled course this
Spring, 2015, we have decided to request that this course be made permanent, and
we are also seeking to fold this course into our existing minor. We will then change the
requirements of the minor from 1 required course with 5 electives to 2 required
courses with 4 electives. This reflects strategic planning assessments of student
feedback, national trends in similar programs and departments, theoretical
commitments within the discipline, and greater emphasis on diversity and social
justice awareness.
Due to the lack of a formal LGBTQ Studies program and the many similarities
between LGBTQ Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies in terms of subject
matter, pedagogy, and methodology, the restatement of the minor will accommodate
those students interested in LGBTQ Studies as a discipline. Consequently, we are
also requesting to change the name of our minor to Studies in Sexuality, Women and
Gender (SWAG) to reflect the new minor configuration, enhanced with required
coursework in the field of sexuality studies.
