Abstract: Applying renormalization-group block transformations to free staggered fermions in their flavor representation, I show that taking the fourth root
of the determinant is consistent with locality. I discuss the generalization of this
result to the interacting theory, and describe tests that can be carried out on
exising dynamical configuration
