Manufacturing Systems Internship
I.
Introduction
This manufacturing systems internship provides qualified graduate students with an
advanced level, supervised, work experience. The internship must be completed at a
pre-approved manufacturing or research facility. During the internship, the student
will be able to demonstrate his/her ability to formally propose research problems,
analyze data, integrate solutions, organize and manage a manufacturing system.
Because the work for this class will be completed at a manufacturing or research site,
the student will not attend regular class meetings. All students must meet with the
instructor prior to enrolling for the internship. Regular contact between the student
and the instructor is necessary in order to ensure that all requirements are understood
and are met on time with appropriate quality.
This syllabus contains the guidelines for the course and should not be discarded. It is
expected that the student will follow the requirements contained in this document to
avoid any confusion during the internship.
II.
Pre-requisites
Completion of all Engineering Technology master’s degree core courses, an
additional 12 semester hours of approved course work, and a minimum GPA of 3.00.
III.
Course Goals
The manufacturing systems internship is a unique educational experience and offers
specific goals relative to student achievement as follows:
A. Provides the student with an advanced, relevant educational experience
about manufacturing.
B. Acquaints the student with a specific manufacturing system within a
manufacturing facility.
C. Develops the student’s ability to propose, analyze, integrate, organize
and manage a manufacturing system.
D. Provides an opportunity to enhance the student’s communication skills.
IV.
Textbook
No specific text is required. It is expected the student will use the knowledge gained
in ENGR 590 and other research based course work in the Manufacturing Systems
Degree requirements as the basis for completing required proposals and reports.
V.
Requirements
A. Before enrolling for the course, the student must receive prior
permission from the instructor of record. The student must complete
and submit to the instructor of record, the “Application for Internship”
form (attached) before formally requesting work site approval. Once the
application is accepted, permission to enroll will be granted. The student
must be enrolled before starting the internship. NO LATE
REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
2
B. The internship site must be approved prior to starting work. Work site
approval is granted by the instructor of record, and is normally only
given after the student has enrolled in the course. The “Preliminary
Internship Schedule” (attached) must be completed before formally
requesting work site approval.
C. Complete and return the “Internship Training Schedule” and “Internship
Plan” (attached). This form must be mailed, or electronically
transmitted, to the instructor no later than the end of the first week of
work.
D. Prepare an initial paper and submit it to the instructor that contains a
plan of completion. This must be completed by the end of the second
week of work.
The initial paper must include, but is not limited to the following items:
1. Time period of internship
2. A brief description of the company, products produced, services
and methods.
3. Proposal of the internship that includes but is not limited to:
a. Background
b. Problem statement
c. Objectives
d. Methods proposed to complete the problem
e. Plan for completion
f. Evaluation plan that shows the instructor that the student
has accomplished the internship objectives
E. Prepare and submit a daily log.
This will be a progress report that informs the instructor of the progress
the student is making in the completion of the stated objectives. The
report should be submitted electronically on a weekly basis. Reports that
contain significant errors will not be accepted.
F. Prepare and submit a final report.
The final report must contain a narrative that describes how the
objectives were met. The report must contain an analysis of the entire
project, outcomes that were expected and unexpected, benefits to the
student and to the company and recommendations for further study or
implementation. The final report must be received by the instructor no
later than two weeks following the end of the internship experience.
Reports that contain significant errors will not be accepted and a failing
grade will be issued for the internship. Students will not be permitted to
submit the final reports multiple times to enhance their final grade.
VI.
Internship Duration
The duration of the internship will be dependent on the time it will take to complete
the objectives set by the intern and the company. The intern, along with the
sponsoring company, will provide an estimate of the duration and allot a minimum
3
time period to complete the problem. Once the internship begins, a more exact period
of work should be agreed upon among the intern, sponsoring company, and the
instructor. All internships must be completed within one semester.
VII.
Evaluation
All work will be graded on a normal A-F basis. The following criteria will be used to
determine the final grade
A. Accuracy, quality, and promptness of the progress and final reports.
B. The recommendation of the company supervisor.
C. The recommendation of the designated instructor.
An evaluation form will be mailed to the supervisor prior to the end of the internship.
VIII. Written Assignments
All assignments must be submitted in electronic format.
IX
Office Hours
Any member of the department graduate faculty may be assigned as coordinator of
the graduate internship. It shall be the responsibility if the intern to contact the
instructor for his/her published office hours.
