WLC 278x: Introduction to Global Film ‘World on Film’ Fall 2011 M 6:00pm-9:00pm 3 credits Dr. Stacey Weber-Fève (sweber@iastate.edu) WLC 278x provides an introduction to the cinema of non-English speaking regions and cultures of the world through representative subtitled films, lectures, discussion, and readings. Students will take a comprehensive look at international film from the golden age of European cinema to contemporary blockbusters and important films of South America, Africa, India, and Asia. This course is both an introduction to the practices of film interpretation and film analysis as well as an international cultural studies course. Students will learn how to engage with film as a mode of “national” and “transnational” cultural expression in addition to film as an art form. Special emphasis will be placed on the emergence of ‘global film culture’ and what that means for the 21st Century. WLC 278x takes as its purpose the academic study of international cinema and discovery of several important auteurs of world cinema. No previous film course or film experience needed! A general overview of film technology, language, and terms and a general introduction to how “to read” a film are presented and practiced the first few weeks of the course. Coursework, readings, and discussion are in ENGLISH. Films are screened in their original language with English subtitles. WLC 278x meets the International Perspectives Requirement.
