A new qualifications framework (the AQF) has been adopted, under which each course must conform to a qualification category. The LLB (Hons) is a bachelor honours degree, an AQF level 8 qualification. Students will demonstrate their progressive attainment of AQF level 8 knowledge, skills and abilities specified. We have also taken this opportunity to review our curriculum and our approach to learning, teaching and assessment, to align with contemporary developments in legal education. www.monash.edu.au 3 What is the difference between the LLB and LLB (Hon) Current - LLB New – LLB (Hon) Not required to conform to a AQF qualification Aligned with AQF Level 8 - course learning outcomes and volume of learning - No more than 8 units on AQF level 7 - Must include a research unit Single LLB – 192 CP Single LLB (Hon) – 204 CP, inc. one extra elective and the research elective LLB in a Double degree– 156 CP LLB (Hon) in a Double degree– 156 CP inc. the research elective 12 compulsories + 6 Quasi-compulsories 17 compulsory units LAW2201 Torts A + LAW2202 Torts B LAW1113 Torts LAW1101 ILR + LAW1104 RaW LAW1111 Foundations of Law & LAW1112 Public law and statutory interpretation What are the differences between the LLB and LLB (Hon) - Continued Current – LLB New – LLB (Hon) LAW3301 Crim law and procedure A + LAW3302 Crim Law B LAW1114 Crim law 1 + LAW4332 Crim law and procedure 2 (co-req for Evidence) LAW5125 Lawyers, ethics and society LAW4309 Lawyers’ ethics in practice LAW5104 Civil procedure LAW4303 Litigation & dispute resolution Law electives 1 Commercial Law electives + 1 Research electives from a prescribed list + other Law electives Honours grade: HI, HIIA, HIIB and HIII + 20% bonus for Honours thesis Honours grade: HI, HIIA and HIIB For graduates with Honours: Bachelor of Laws (Honours) on testamur All LLB (Hon) graduates: Bachelor of Laws (Honours) on testamur Flexible course progression More structured: 1st 8 units taught at AQF level 7 in specified order, all other units (inc electives) at AQF level 8 How does it impact you? • You will continue according to your current course map within the maximum course period given to you when you first enrolled. • You will be able to enrol into the new units introduced as part of the new curriculum, except the two first year units and LAW4801 Honours Research Project. • You will find some of the units have their unit title and code changed progressively. • There will be changes on the pre-requisites and/or co-requisites of some units. Why there will be changes on the calculation of Honours course grades? • Effective from 2016, the basis for awarding the Honours grades for LLB students will be revised. • In order to communicate more clearly the relative achievement that each Honours grade represents. • It will also allow greater comparability among LLB graduates who completed in different years. The extra 20% weighting for LAW5207 Honours thesis will be retained for calculating HWA for current LLB students. www.monash.edu.au 9 Threshold Honours Weighted Average Mark Current Honours grade Threshold Honours Weighted Average Mark H1 73 HIIA 71 HIIB 69 HIII 67 From 2016 Honours grade Student Percentile H1 90th percentile – top 10% of the cohort HIIA 75th percentile – top 25% of the cohort HIIB 60th percentile – top 40% of the cohort HIII 50th percentile – top 50% of the cohort www.monash.edu.au 10 Any questions? www.monash.edu.au 11
