Jessup Moot Competition – LAW 4806
The Jessup International Law Moot is the largest and most prestigious international mooting

Each year, Monash University sends a team to compete in the national rounds of the Jessup Moot in
Canberra in February. The top two teams from these national rounds then progress to the
international finals in Washington DC in March.
The competition requires the preparation of two detailed written memorials – one each on behalf of
the applicant and respondent – addressing a comprehensive fictional scenario (‘the Compromis’)
which will be released in September 2015. Research and writing skills are therefore important in
addition to advocacy skills.
The team will comprise 5 members, with one academic staff member, Eric Wilson, acting as the
coach. The workload will be shared among the team and will be significant, particularly leading up to
the deadline for submitting the written memorials in early January, and again leading up to the
competition in early February. However, anyone who has ever competed in the Jessup Moot will tell
you that it was an extraordinary learning experience and well worth the intense workload.
The competition will be held at Australia National University (ANU), Canberra, during the first week
of February 2016. Jessup problems typically address many different areas of international law, so
there should be aspects of the problem of interest to anyone with an interest in international law.
The full problem is released in September.
Students who are selected as part of the team may be eligible to be enrolled in a 6-point
undergraduate unit – LAW 4806 – Jessup Moot Competition. The preparation of the memorials and
participation in the moot competition constitutes the assessment for that unit. (Some students will
not be eligible for enrolment in that unit, e.g. students who have previously received course credit
for the Vis or Jessup Moots, or students who do not have sufficient room for another 6 credit points
to complete their course. Those students may still be eligible to participate in the moot, but may not
receive any course credit for doing so.)
The faculty is currently running another international mooting competition – the Vis International
Commercial Arbitration Moot. Students cannot participate in both moots in the same year, but you
are welcome to apply for both.

Applications are required by Friday 31 July, 5:00 pm. If there are not sufficient applications to
ensure a good quality team at this date, applications may be re-opened.
Depending on the number of applicants, it may be necessary to have a personal interviews in order
to select the final team. Shortlisted applicants will be advised if this is the case.
Announcements of the selection of the team will be made by Friday, 21 August.

Note: You may apply for the moot even if you do not wish to undertake the unit. Students who
are still in their final year this year, are eligible to compete in next February’s and March’s
competitions.

Selection Criteria
The Jessup Moot is intended to be a group learning experience, developing communication, research,
collegial and advocacy skills in a legal context dealing with arbitration, contract, conflict of laws and
comparative laws. As such there is no single criterion or hierarchy of criteria that guides the selection
process. Ideally, the final group will have a mix of talents and attributes so that it will be competent,
efficient and harmonious.
Thus in putting together your application, do not feel constrained by the headings on this
form, but instead present information about all your attributes and experiences that you think
would be useful in a team research, writing and advocacy training environment.

Other summer commitments
A very important part of the program is the group work where we workshop ideas. It is always very
difficult to get a large group all together at one time. It is natural for students to engage in paid work,
including summer clerkships, take some vacation and have other honorary commitments.
Nevertheless, a relevant factor in making the final selection may be whether a particular applicant is
able to make a sufficient commitment, including being available at common meeting times. Thus in
the following section could you indicate particular times and dates where you could not attend group
meetings. Please provide the details of major time commitments such as summer clerkships, regular
employment and planned vacations. NB: Continuance in the program will be dependent on
properly meeting the time commitments made and you are expected to make total disclosure
in this section.
