Reviewing North Carolina, Florida, Mississippi, and California disaster recovery statutes, as well as any statutes which may affect the state’s ability to respond and recover to disasters. Working with a team of scholars to design model statutes and regulations, based off the research above, to improve state planning and resilience in the face of natural disasters. Charlotte Center City Partners­ Charlotte, NC Research Intern, May 2010‐December 2010 Assessing the efficacy of local and state government incentives used to attract business relocation and expansion into Uptown Charlotte. Preparing a paper and presentation for the city economic development team, comparing Charlotte business incentives to the incentive packages offered by peer cities and recommending cost‐efficient incentive modifications, to ensure that the city is well‐positioned to attract more jobs as the economy rebuilds. Hornstein, September 2008‐ May 2010 Drafted memorandum to the Joint Select Study Committee on the Potential Impact of Major Hurricanes on the North Carolina Insurance Industry regarding other southeastern states’ programs to minimize hurricane damage costs using construction mitigation grants and insurance discount incentives. Educated legislators, regulators, consumer advocates, industry representatives and the general public on the necessity of reforming the N.C. Insurance Underwriting Association. Managed six teaching assistants and coordinated administrative tasks for an undergraduate Environmental Law and Policy course of 180 students. Developed and supervised extracurricular legal research projects for volunteer students in the Environmental Law and Policy course to supplement what is taught in class. Compared expert witness testimony rules of evidence for all states to discover which states are applying an amendment to Federal Rule of Evidence 703 regarding permissible bases for expert testimony, and any deviations from the amendment. Guardian ad Litem, 26th Judicial District of North Carolina­ Charlotte, NC Legal Intern, May 2008‐November 2008 Researched and drafted an appellate brief to the North Carolina Court of Appeals applying a Rule of Evidence that had no precedent for use in civil juvenile actions, resulting in successful appeal for the client. Prepared petition for Termination of Parental Rights proceeding in N.C. District Court, Juvenile Division. Assisted office generally with legal research in trial preparation (e.g., motions, evidence organization, anticipated objections, etc.) and case work.
