Digital Storytelling Workshop Facilitator

Applications are invited for a short-term Research Assistant position.
Candidates: Currently enrolled SFU graduate Masters or Doctoral students.
Salary: $20/hr (Masters student), $25/hr (Doctoral student)
Hours: Approximately 3 – 6 hours/weekly for 12 to 14 weeks
Term of Appointment: September – December, 2015
Location: SFU Burnaby campus and workshop location TBD (no office space available; must have
own laptop; own transportation would be an asset)

Project: Digitizing the wisdom of our elders: From digital storytelling to life learning
An SSHRC Partnership Development Grant.
Three part-time research assistant positions (workshop facilitator, workshop co-facilitator) are
available for an SSHRC-funded research project (Dr. David Kaufman, Principal Investigator,
Professor in the Faculty of Education).
This project provides digital storytelling workshops to older adults. Workshop facilitators and cofacilitators are expected to attend a training session, after which they will facilitate or co-facilitate a
9- or 10-week digital storytelling workshop and associated workshop tutorials. They will provide
older adults with skills in storytelling and use of a browser-based digital storytelling program, as
well as collecting quantitative and qualitative data associated with the project.
The study focuses on the use digital storytelling with older adults in the Metro Vancouver area to
encourage and support communication and socialization, and encourage the maintenance and
development of cognitive, communication, media and technology skills.
Qualifications
 A cooperative and courteous manner and an ability to communicate effectively with workshop
participants, project partners, and co-workers on the project.
 Ability to exercise mature judgment and initiative.
 Excellent English communication skills (written and oral – including grammar, spelling and
punctuation
 Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
 Excellent intercultural sensitivity.
 Enjoy working as a part of a team.
