MATH 591X—PAPER ON TEACHING Due Monday of Final’s Week (December 13, 2010)—Turn in to Prof. Paul Sacks The end product should be a two to three page paper about some of the aspects of your teaching experiences in the Mathematics department this semester. As background for the paper we ask that you participate in a few teaching related activities in the Mathematics department or on campus. These activities can include • Participate in or attend a CELT activity. This might be a CELT sponsored colloquium or workshop or seminar. You also might choose to meet with one of the CELT staff to discuss some question or questions related to teaching. • Discuss your own teaching experience this semester and how these experiences have changed some of your ideas about teaching. • Write about your reactions to feedback from Ozkan or from other sources. • Discuss your own thoughts or philosophy about teaching. What do you do that make you an effective teacher? What are your goals for your students? • Attend and participate in the department’s Math Teaching Seminar. • Observe classes taught by another assistant or by a faculty member and ask that he/she observe you. Meet to discuss the observations. • Observe one of the Saturday morning Math Circles for High School students. • Arrange with another instructor to be a guest lecturer in a course for a day. These are just some ideas. Your activities for the semester should include a variety of these activities. You may have other ideas of something you would like to do related to teaching. If so see Dr. Sacks or Dr. Johnston to discuss you idea. 1
