Have you registered for fall Principal READY 2015? The fall
Principal READY meetings are scheduled regionally in November
and December.
A number of timely topics will be covered in these sessions
including the 2014-15 Educator Evaluation System data, new
legislation, Analysis of Student Work and student surveys.
Participants may expect to interact with various data points
including EVAAS and student growth data using a PLN framework.
Breakout sessions will be differentiated and focused on the needs
of principals in each region based on feedback shared with Service
Support Teams. If you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to
register online.
I hope your schedule will allow you to attend one of these regional
meetings. Participants from past READY regional principal meetings say the experience was beneficial
and geared to the information that principals in the region most needed.

Multi-Tiered System of Support:
Casting a Vision
Creating a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) requires weaving
together installed academic and behavior problem-solving
frameworks. This work requires having a clear goal – a vision – for
this change.
The NCDPI MTSS team is providing opportunities for districts, charter schools and state-operated
programs to analyze current installation of these parallel structures and cast a vision for the adoption of
this woven framework. District and school leadership teams will provide critical guidance during the
exploration and installation stages of MTSS to ensure a vision is developed and clearly communicated
to all staff.
Reach out to your MTSS consultant for more information on opportunities to initiate this work. Contact
information can be found on the NCMTSS wikispace.
Identifying Students Entering “At Risk Zone”
Determining when students enter the "at risk zone" can be challenging. Early Warning Systems provide
schools and districts with a mechanism to calculate a "risk level" using research-based and locallyselected risk indicators.
Please complete this online survey by Oct. 26 so that we may ascertain your capacity and use of early
warning systems, including the At Risk Report in PowerSchool. The results of the survey will be used to
design technical assistance and support of dropout prevention efforts.
If you have any questions, please contact Debora Williams.
October is “Connected Educator Month”
As educators, it’s often challenging to remain current with
professional knowledge while actively serving our schools and
districts. Being aware of resources that help keep us informed of
current and emerging trends in education is more valuable than
ever. How do we reach beyond the walls of our school buildings to
seek out professional knowledge and growth opportunities?
Visit the Connected Educators website to find the answers to this question. Educators are encouraged
to grow your professional learning network by engaging in virtual discussions with others, sharing
resources, tweeting, participating in national “Connected Educator Month” events and more.
Be sure to take a look at the Connected Educator Starter Kit. Tweet often, using the hashtag #CE15, as
you share your thoughts and activities. Stay tuned as the Digital Teaching and Learning Division shares
weekly updates to assist you in the process of growing your “connectedness.”

2015-16 Reward Schools’ Recognition
The United States Department of Education continues to sponsor a differentiated system of recognition,
accountability and support for schools. As a result, NCDPI staff have identified the state’s topperforming Title I Schools, also known as Reward Schools, for the 2015-16 school year.
The top ten percent of all Reward Schools are North Carolina’s 2015 nominees for the National Title I
Distinguished Schools Recognition Program. North Carolina will be permitted to select a Title I school to
proudly represent the state at the national level in one of two categories. Over the next few weeks, one
school will be selected for high performance and one school will be selected for high progress.
Congratulations to the directors, principals, staff and students on this great accomplishment. Questions
about Reward Schools may be directed to Freda Lee.
Chatham Teacher Receives Milken Award
Congratulations to Chatham Central High (Chatham County
Schools) science teacher Eric Patin who today was named North
Carolina’s 2015 Milken Educator Award recipient. Patin received an
unrestricted check in the amount of $25,000.
State Superintendent June Atkinson, who presented the award,
said, "One of the highest compliments any teacher could receive is knowing that students request you
for their teacher and this is true for Eric. He is well respected by students and fellow teachers. Chatham
Central High is fortunate to have him on staff; and North Carolina is fortunate to have him in its teaching
ranks."
Global-Ready School Designation
Intent to Apply
Schools interested in applying for the Global-Ready School
designation for the 2015-16 school year need a Word version of the
application form to complete and submit. Submit the Intent To
Apply form and the contact person listed will receive a Word
version of the current year application, along with direct updates regarding the application, resources
and webinars. Receiving the Word version of the application does not obligate the school to apply.
Applications will be available in the next few weeks and will be due April 1, 2016.
Additional information on the Global-Ready District or School designation is available on the NC Global
Education website or by contacting Special Assistant for Global Education Helga Fasciano.

The U.S. Department of Education (USED) Green Ribbon Schools’ award program for
2015-16 is now open for nominations.
The award recognizes schools and districts from across the United States that excel in
reducing environmental impact and costs, improving the health and wellness of students
and staff, and providing effective environmental and sustainability education that
incorporates STEM, civic skills and green career pathways.
Three North Carolina schools have received this outstanding national award. LEAs or principals should
apply directly to NCDPI. Up to four North Carolina schools can be nominated by the department and
sent to the USED for national consideration.
Additional information and applications are available online under “Green Ribbon Schools.” For more
information, please contact Ron Collier.
North Carolina Virtual Public
School News
The North Carolina Virtual Public School staff have researched and reviewed a substantial list of
assistive technologies. These technologies can help students with disabilities who are enrolled in
NCVPS online courses. These resources also are great for special needs students in the traditional
classroom as well as the general student population. You can view the list of assistive technologies
online.
The NCVPS has released its 2014-15 scorecard. District scorecards will be coming soon. Scorecard
details are available on the NCVPS website.

Enhance your High School STEM
Content and Delivery
Are your schools and programs into robotics, web-based
applications, and looking for new innovative ways to invent? Then
check out The Construct.
The Construct is the place in the cloud for the creation of robotics
simulations using the most popular simulators in the market. Just
log into their system, select a simulator and start simulating.
Or, are your schools and programs involved in agriscience, aviation and robotics? If so, visit the Real
World Design Challenge (RWDC) for an overview and full proposal on the Getting Started page. This
challenge focuses on unmanned systems and precision agriculture through the design and
implementation of a UAS and other robotic systems to support precision agriculture, specifically the
detection of moisture around a local food production crop (regional to your area).
Take the challenge and implement concepts from Engineering Technology; but you must register by
Nov. 20. Contact Tina Marcus for more information.
