In the early Moravian church services of North Carolina, people sang together in
German—the language spoken in the community. Moravian schools taught both
African-American and white children how to play classical flute and violin. As
North Carolina grew, the Irish and Scots contributed fiddle music and melodies to
local dances. Some of these music styles later grew into what we now call
bluegrass. These styles of music are now popular throughout the state.

Children learned how to play the fiddle in church, which explains people
singing during services today.
