This policy applies to faculty and staff, volunteers, contractors and visitors on
university property.
*PURPOSE:
It is the objective of the University of Mary Washington to provide the
healthiest environment possible for students, staff, and faculty members and
visitors.
DEFINITIONS:
Smoking: The carrying or holding of any lighted pipe, cigar or cigarette of any
kind, or any other lighted smoking equipment, or device or the lighting, inhaling
or exhaling of smoke or vapor from a pipe, cigar, cigarette, or any other
smoking equipment or device of any kind.
*POLICY
STATEMENT:
It is the policy of the University that smoking is prohibited in all buildings and
UMW and State vehicles, and that the right of the nonsmoker to protect from
smoke his or her health takes precedence over an individual’s desire to smoke.

The major terms of this this policy are listed below:
A. At the entrance of buildings, signs are posted stating “Smoking
Prohibited Inside UMW Buildings.”
B. Smoking is not permitted within 50 feet of any residential, academic, or
administrative buildings. Receptacles will be provided at the entrances
of UMW buildings and athletics fields for the purpose of collecting
smoking debris, i.e. cigarette butts. These receptacles in no way
indicate a designated smoking area. This would include the Stafford
Campus and Dahlgren Campus, as well as Eagle Landing located in
Eagle Village.
C.
Complaints arising from this policy should be addressed with the
Associate Vice President for Human Resources and AAEEO, whose
decision is final.
D. “No Smoking” stickers will be placed in all UMW and State vehicles.
Smoking cessation classes and support are available through the state health

benefits programs. Employees may contact the Office of Human Resources for
more information.

The Associate Vice President for Human Resources and AAEEO is responsible
for making revisions to this policy as dictated by State requirements and
University-approved recommendations.
This policy is posted on Board Docs. New employees are informed of this policy
at new employee orientation and all employees may find reference to the policy
in the staff handbook.
The Associate Vice President for Human Resources and AAEEO is responsible
for the interpretation, consistent application, and enforcement of this policy.
Management is responsible for implementing this policy within their work
units.
