wastewater operators to maintain certification
through the completion of approved educational
course offerings. To be eligible for renewal,
operators must have earned the required number
of Continuing Education training Units (CEUs)
during two-year periods ending March 31 of oddnumbered years. Applications for renewal must
be completed and returned, with applicable fees,
within 60 days of the expiration date. Training
ranges from basic concepts through advanced
applications, offering water and wastewater
operators the skills necessary to obtain recertification hours in compliance with state regulations.
Grade I and II Water and Wastewater operators
are required to complete 10 hours (1.0 CEU).
Grade III and IV Water and Wastewater operators
are required to complete 20 hours (2.0 CEU) of
training every two years. The current renewal
period is April 1, 2015 through March 31, 2017.

This lagoon treatment process usually works
well for wastewater treatment in small communities, however the regulated effluent quality is
not always met. The most frequent problems
are elevated BOD5, TSS and ammonia (where
regulated), and high or low pH. Also odor from
lagoons can be a problem. Troubleshooting
lagoons for effluent quality problems is not
straightforward as the biological and chemical
process involved are numerous and complex
and not fully understood by most engineers and
operators. In this course all the above will be
discussed along with troubleshooting keys and
solutions.

Water and Wastewater
Operator Training
SELF-GUIDED
PROGRAMS
Kirkwood Community College’s Environmental
Training Center is offering the following selfguided training opportunities for water well
contractors, water and wastewater operators.
What is self-guided training? Self-guided training is the educational process where individuals
learn independently at their own pace.
Do I have to purchase a book? The book is included in the price of your course! DO NOT prepurchase your book – you will not receive a tuition break if you do.
What is the difference between paper/pencil
and online?
PAPER/PENCIL: 1) Proceed through each
lesson by reading through short sections and
fill out an answer sheet for the questions at
the end of each section. Complete the test at
the end of each chapter on the answer sheet
provided and return for grading. A successful
score of 70 percent allows you to pass each
chapter.
2) After successful completion of all chapter
tests, you will need to designate a monitor for
your final examination. Your final exam will then
be sent to your monitor for testing. After completion of the final examination, the monitor will
return all testing material to the Environmental
Training Center for grading.
ONLINE CHAPTER TESTING: There are some
Self-Guided programs that you may complete by
taking the chapter test online (computer-based).
1) Proceed through each chapter by reading
through short sections, then take section test
online. A successful score of 70 percent allows
you to pass each chapter.
2) After successful completion of all chapter
tests, you will need to designate a monitor for
your final examination. Your final exam will then
be sent to your monitor for testing. After completion of the final examination, the monitor will
return all testing material to the Environmental
Training Center for grading.
How long does it take to complete a course? The
time needed to complete a course depends on
each person. Set your own pace, but establish
a regular schedule. Most students require from
80-125 hours of study to complete each course.
Who do I contact to get registered? You may
contact Kirkwood Community College’s phonein registration at 319-398-1022 or 1-800332-8833, mail in your completed registration
form found in this catalog, or register online at
www.kirkwood.edu/ce.
What do I get when I finish? Upon successful
completion of 70 percent or above, you will receive a letter of completion and Kirkwood Community College will report this to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to be applied to
your renewal or upgrade of your license.
Can I split my CEUs? No, you must choose what
license you would like your CEUs applied to. No
exceptions.

SOLID WASTE
Receiving recertification for your Water Treatment, Water Distribution and Wastewater license
has become easier. There are several recertification training opportunities that maybe taken via
the Internet. These courses include interactive
participation opportunities and may require the
individual to pass a self-check exam.
Integrated Solid Waste
Management (online)
What is online training? Online training refers
to any education that is conducted outside of
a traditional classroom setting via the Internet.
Do I have to purchase a book? Books are
optional but recommended for the course and
are not included in the tuition of the training.
If you choose to purchase a book, you may
contact the bookstore at Kirkwood Community
College to order your book.
What to expect as a new student? As a new student, you will be able to take the lecture portion
of the course via the Internet, anytime, anywhere. To make this course as accessible as
possible, the computer hardware requirements
and user skills are very basic. These classes will
contain high-quality content, audio, audio text,
self-tests, quizzes and a final exam. You will still
need to read the textbook when taking these
courses.
Can I split my CEUs? No, you must choose what
license you would like your CEUs applied to. No
exceptions.
Kirkwood Community College offers the following online training opportunities for operators
that have a Solid Waste license. Upon successful
completion of a course, your CEUs will be reported to the State of Iowa Department of Natural
Resources-Operator Certification Division.
Recommended for: Not Applicable.
(6.0 Landfill Recertification)
This course provides a comprehensive look
at solid waste management, combining the
aspects of landfill, composting and household
hazardous waste operations. This class will
meet or exceed most state requirements for the
educational components of certification and/or
licensing required for solid waste professionals.

Solid Waste Composting
(online)
Recommended for: Not Applicable.
(2.5 Landfill Recertification)
Composting is the controlled process of organic
degradation or waste decomposition. This webbased course will provide those taking the
class with knowledge in the process of waste
decomposition, an array or microorganisms and
invertebrates consume the organics and convert them to humus. In the truest sense, solid
waste composting is actually microbe farming,
and like any type of farming, success has a
lot to do with the farmer knowing how to make
what he is raising thrive and grow. This class will
meet or exceed most state requirements for the
educational components of certification and/or
licensing required for solid waste professionals.
ETRC-4100-70441 / $175
What do I get when I finish? Upon successful
completion of 70 percent or above, you will receive a letter of completion and Kirkwood Community College will report this to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to be applied to
your renewal or upgrade of your license.
Who do I contact to get registered? You may
contact Kirkwood Community College’s phonein registration at 319-398-1022 or 1-800332-8833, mail in your completed registration

• Over the next 20 years, up to $1 trillion must be spent to upgrade facilities and infrastructures to meet new U.S. water quality standards.
• An estimated 90,000 dedicated men and women work in the water environmental technology field. Labor demographics threaten a significant drop in
employees as an aging population leaves the work
force during the next decade.
