Associated Press 10-27-07 Iowa Regents Will Vote On Arming Campus Police DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) _ The Iowa Board of Regents is scheduled to take up a proposal to arm campus police when they meet on Wednesday. The proposal to arm officers at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa is part of a comprehensive security plan the regents will discuss when they meet in Iowa City. The carrying of guns by police at the state's universities has been banned for 40 years. The proposed policy also would include implementing an emergency communications system, seeking early identification of people who may be a threat and establishing additional training programs for campus police. The board's executive director, Gary Steinke, says the proposal will have its first reading on Wednesday but the regents could waive the second reading and approve the plan. He says the policy would not be implemented until the universities meet its requirements.
