Discussion set on 'Sustainability'
The Iowa Farmers Union will host a panel discussion, "An Evening on
Sustainability," from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Room 213 of Cartwright Hall on the
Drake University campus.
Speakers will include Fred Kirschenmann, an organic farmer and
distinguished fellow at the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture; Paul
Willis, a hog farmer and manager of Niman Ranch Pork; and architect Kevin
Nordmeyer, a partner in RDG Planning and Design and a member of the U.S.
Green Building Council.
Kunstler to lecture on oil, climate issues
Author and social critic James Howard Kunstler will speak on "The Long
Emergency: The Coming Global Oil Crisis and Climate Change" at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, in the Sun Room of the Iowa State University Memorial Union in
Ames.
He also will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lang Hall Auditorium on the University of
Northern Iowa campus.
He also will meet with students on both campuses.
Kunstler's lectures will look at the economic, political and social changes coming
from the end of access to cheap fossil fuels and the impact this will have on the
way we live, work, farm and build.
Food producers, buyers can talk over breakfast
Reservations need to be made by Oct. 15 for a networking breakfast that will
begin at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 17 at Patrick's Restaurant, 211 S. Seventh St., Adel.
Central Iowa producers and food buyers are invited to the breakfast, which will
feature locally grown foods to give them a chance to make contacts.
After the meal, Matt Russell of the Iowa Network for Community Agriculture and
Mallory Smith, director of the statewide Buy Fresh Buy Local campaign, will
speak.
Two similar breakfasts will be held Nov. 7 in Vinton and Nov. 14 in Decorah.
The project is funded by a grant from Farm Aid. The meal is co-sponsored by the
Buy Fresh Buy Local campaign, Iowa State University Extension and the Iowa
Network for Community Agriculture.
