Des Moines Register 09-04-07 Culver introduces Power Fund leaders JONATHAN ROOS REGISTER STAFF WRITER Gov. Chet Culver publicly introduced today the Iowans who will be in charge of a new state program to invest $100 million in renewable energy research and development projects. Roya Stanley, a former Iowa Department of Natural Resources energy specialist, will be the point person of the effort, serving as director of the new Office of Energy Independence. Stanley has been a liaison between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo., and state, local and farm leaders since 2000. Culver and Lt. Gov. Patty Judge also introduced the Iowa Power Fund’s board of directors at a Statehouse event. Retired insurance executive Fred Hubbell of Des Moines will chair the 18-member board. The board’s 10 other voting members are Lucy Norton of Clive, Glenn Cannon of Waverly, Peter Hemken of Des Moines, Carrie LaSeur of Mount Vernon, Patricia Higby of Cedar Falls, Thomas Wind of Jefferson, Iowa Utilities Board Director John Norris, Economic Development Director Mike Tramontina, Natural Resources Director Rich Leopold and Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey. The board’s seven non-voting members are: Sen. Roger Stewart, D-Preston; Sen. Hubert Houser, R-Carson; Rep. Nathan Reichert, D-Muscatine; Rep. Chuck Soderberg, R-Le Mars; community colleges representative Mary Jo Dolan of Des Moines, private colleges representative Kent Henning of Johnston and Iowa State University President Gregory Geoffroy. A separate committee will review projects to ensure they are practical, economically feasible and consistent with the goals of the Power Fund. Members are Franklin Codel of West Des Moines, Vern Gebhart of Marion, Floyd Barwig of Ames, Ted Crosbie of Earlham, William Hunter of Coralville, Hubbell and Higby.
