De Moines Register 09-07-07 Energy event targets better environment By JERRY PERKINS REGISTER FARM EDITOR The I-Renew Energy EXPO will give Iowans an opportunity to learn how to use renewable energy to improve their impact on the environment. The event will be held 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sunday at Solon High School. The event features two keynote speakers: - Greg Pahl, author of Citizen Powered Energy Handbook and Biodiesel, will speak Saturday about a new movement called community-supported energy. Pahl's presentation will include examples of successful initiatives and obstacles to achieving greater community control of energy resources. - Kate Schwennsen, associate professor of architecture and associate dean for academic programs in the College of Design at Iowa State University, will talk Sunday about home designs that encourage a more sustainable Iowa. Schwennsen will discuss how buildings are the world's single, biggest source of emissions and energy consumption and how designs that are more environmentally, economically and socially sustainable can lead to less energy consumption and fewer carbon emissions. The I-Renew Energy EXPO will also feature 70 exhibitors, a Clean Fuel Car Show, demonstrations of wind and solar power, and a hydrogen fuel cell.
