Veishea leads into ISU's 150th birthday celebration
By Darwin Danielson
The annual student-run Veishea celebration is underway at Iowa State
University in Ames this week -- and it's just the start of what will be a year-long
party. Veishea co-chair Christina Dvorak says the theme this year is "Timeless
Tradition."
Dvorak says they chose that theme because Veishea kicks off the 150th birthday
celebration of ISU and it's also the 85th year for Veishea. She says the tradition
of Veishea and the 150 years of the school are both very important to the school,
so they decided to tie them together. Dvorak, a senior advertising major from
Omaha, Nebraska, says as Veishea wraps up this weekend with the kickoff for
the 150th birthday celebration.
Dvorak says that includes the Sesquicentennial Veishea Village with over 85
tents showcasing all aspects of the university's history. She says after the
Saturday parade there'll be 20,000 pieces of free birthday cake. Dvorak says
members of the Dairy Science Club have created a special "Cyclone
Celebration" ice cream for the event that includes golden cake batter and swirls
of cardinal and gold sprinkles.
Dvorak says she hasn't had a chance to taste the ice cream yet, but those
who've sampled it says it's "really, really yummy." The Dairy Science club will sell
five-thousand servings of the special ice cream Saturday along with their normal
flavors. Dvorak has this recommendation for "must see" Veishea events.
She recommends the parade that begins at 10:40 on Saturday and says the
Veishea village has a lot going on too. Veishea is called the largest student-run
event in the country.
