Des Moines Register 01-14-07 Grassroots Cattle workshop series around state Cattle producers are asked to register by Thursday for a series of workshops in the Mason City area about starting or expanding their cattle business. Producers should register by Jan. 31 for the second workshop series to be held Feb. 7, 14 and 21 at Iowa Valley Community College in Marshalltown. Register by Feb. 28 for a third series to be held March 7, 14 and 21 at Iowa Valley Community College, Room 805, CE Building in Tripoli. Topics include developing a plan, cattle feeding practices and tools and a tour of beef feedlots. Cost is $40 a workshop or $120 for three and includes meals, a manual and tools to help develop a cattle feeding business. Speakers are Iowa State University Extension specialists Russ Euken, livestock specialist; Kelvin Leibold and Robert Tigner, farm management specialists; John Lawrence, director of the Iowa Beef Center; and Dan Loy, beef specialist. Business program begins Saturday Grow Your Small Market Farm, a business planning program for new or existing farm and natural resource-based businesses, begins its seventh year when it meets 9 a.m.-noon Saturday through April 21 in the Gerdin Business Building at Iowa State University in Ames. Cost is $425. From May to October, site visits will be made to each business. In the fall, participants return to Iowa State to share experiences and their future plans and to attend a statewide networking event.
