Regents vote Monday on 5.2% tuition hike

By: Diane Heldt - The Gazette

Proposed tuition increases of 5.2 percent for resident undergraduates next year at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern

Iowa will go to the state Board of Regents Monday for approval.

The 2007-08 tuition proposal, part of Monday's meeting docket released this morning, is unchanged from the numbers the regents discussed last month. The regents meet Monday in Iowa City.

Students leaders from the UI, ISU and UNI said last month the proposed increases are fair and in keeping with rising education inflation costs.

Base tuition would increase 5.2 percent for 2007-08 at the three universities, while tuition and fees would increase by 6.1 percent at the UI, 5.1 percent at ISU and 4.7 percent at UNI.

Undergraduate resident students would pay an additional $358 in tuition and fees at the UI, $301 at ISU and $278 at UNI.

The increase would raise resident tuition and fees to $6,273 at the UI, $6,161 at

ISU and $6,190 at UNI. Out-of-state undergraduates would pay increases of 7.2 percent at the UI, to $19,445; 3.5 percent at ISU, to $16,919; and 3.3 percent at

UNI, to $14,282.
