The senior quarterback tossed three touchdowns Saturday as the 16th-ranked Hawkeyes beat Iowa State University 27-17 in Iowa City. The Cyclones (2-1) seemed poised to beat Iowa for the seventh time in nine tries when they led 14-3 in the second quarter. But Tate led Iowa (3-0) by throwing a pair of touchdowns in the second half. He led consecutive scoring drives that put Iowa ahead 24-17 early in the fourth quarter. He found Tony Moeaki for a 19-yard touchdown with 3:32 left in the third quarter to tie the game at 17, then hit Tom Busch for a 2-yard scoring strike that proved to be the game-winning score. Iowa's defense did the rest. Bret Meyer finished 15 of 31 for 152 yards, and passed Seneca Wallace as Iowa State's career leader in passing yards. He also ran for 74 yards and a touchdown.
