Ag biotech focus of ISU symposium
Agricultural biotechnology issues will be discussed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Tuesday at the Gateway Center on U.S. Highway 30 and Elwood Drive in Ames
during the third annual symposium of Iowa State University's Biosafety
Institute for Genetically Modified Agricultural Products.
"Understanding and Communicating Issues in Agricultural Biotechnology" will be
divided into two sessions, said Jeff Wolt, professor of agronomy.
One will be on science and policy issues and the other will focus on
communicating agricultural biotechnology's risks and benefits.
A wine and cheese reception will follow at 4:45 p.m.
Limited registrations are still available. Registration costs $100, $50 for Iowa
State faculty or staff and $25 for students.

Ag awards to ISU faculty, alumni and students
Marvin Walter of Ames has received the Distinguished Achievement and Service
to Agriculture Award from the Iowa Chapter of the Honor Society of Agriculture,
known as Gamma Sigma Delta.
Four Mission Awards were presented to recognize faculty in the College of
Agriculture.
Ron Deiter, professor of economics, and Joseph Sebranek, university professor
of animal science, received teaching awards; Helen Jensen, professor of
economics, received the research award, and the Extension award went to Tom
Baas, associate professor of animal science.
Richard and Nancy Degner of Ankeny received the alumni award of merit, which
is given to alumni who have contributed to agriculture.
Nancy is executive director of the Iowa Beef Industry Council and Rich is
executive director of the Iowa Pork Producers Association.
Two undergraduates were honored. Amanda Jo Kreuder of Thomson, Ill.,
received the sophomore scholarship award of merit. Caleb Grote of Bayard
received the senior scholarship award of merit.
Officers are Gregory Miller, president; Thomas Brumm, vice president; and
Michael Duffy, secretary-treasurer.
