Information for Study Participants - Please keep this form The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of exercise and psychosocial factors on the immune response to influenza immunization. We will measure immune response to influenza immunization by collecting 12 small blood samples over the course of 17-18 months. We will ask participants to complete several surveys (measuring diet, activity, and psychosocial factors) at several time points throughout the study. Participation in the study will be determined following the completion of a medical history, physical examination if deemed necessary by the study physician, and a physician-supervised maximal exercise test. Subjects will be randomly assigned to an aerobic exercise or a flexibility/balance exercise group. The exercise intervention will take place over 12 months. After the 12 month period, we will ask participants to continue until the final blood sample is taken (approximately 17-18 months from the start of the program). Participation in the study is completely voluntary and participants may withdraw their consent to participate at any time. We will ask all participants in the study to donate several blood samples in order to measure immune response to the influenza vaccination. All participants will be immunized with the influenza vaccine prior to the start of exercise intervention. We will collect 2 blood samples prior to receiving the vaccine, and again at 4 time points after receiving the vaccine ( 1 week after receiving the vaccine, 4 weeks after receiving the vaccine, 3 months after the receiving the vaccine , and 6 months after receiving the vaccine). After the 1 year exercise intervention, this same schedule will be repeated. All of the data collected in this study is confidential and all staff participating on the project will be asked to sign a statement of confidentiality. All subjects are assigned a number and this number is used in all computer data files. No individual data will be released without specific written consent. Immunization, blood collection, and activity measurement of all participants will take place in Room 140, Forker Building.
