Monash Faculty of Science Co-Curriculum Program Please note that this is a 0 credit point unit (non DEEWR reportable) established as a Co-Curriculum program, as approved by the Monash University Education Committee (UEC). The Monash Co-Curriculum Program Investigate (INV) Category Program Summary (AHEGS text): The Faculty of Science Student Industry Placement Program provides students with an opportunity to work independently with an industry partner on a short-term research project aligned with their area-of-study. The program provides students with valuable industry and careers experience and enables them to apply their degree-related knowledge and skills to real-life contexts, thereby developing or further enhancing their problem-solving, leadership and communication skills. Credit Point Value: 0 Prerequisites and Prohibitions: No particular restrictions. Faculty must publish entry process/selection criteria if any quota is put in place. Lead / Primary Teaching Responsible Organisational Unit: Science Faculty, Monash University Clayton campus Process: See Figure 1 Student Attributes: • Discipline knowledge: - An advanced level of understanding of at least one specialized area of contemporary science, with a capacity to apply this knowledge • Quantitative literacy: - Collect, organize, analyze and interpret data meaningfully, using mathematical and statistical tools as appropriate to the discipline of specialization • Ethical, social and international understanding: - An understanding of how scientists, working in a world-wide community, build upon and recognize the work of others - An awareness of OHS issues relating to scientific research - An appreciation of the role and benefits of science in society • Management of self, others and tasks: - Have a capacity to evaluate their own performance - Be able to appropriately plan and carry out tasks - Be able to work collaboratively and effectively with individuals and in teams Minimum Requirements: Accreditation is offered to students enrolled in the Science Faculty (both single- and double-degree students) who successfully undertake placement as part of the Science Industry Placement Program (SIPP). This includes: • Documented program learning outcomes, which focus explicitly on the development of research skills and awareness of research. • Documented, publicised participation requirements. • A program convenor that is a Monash member of staff. • Minimum of 30 hours participation (maximum 80 hours) in the program. • 0 credit point unit in Callista, used to record successful completion by students. • For University-wide programs, requests for approval must be submitted to the appropriate Monash committee. Reports that summarise approvals will then be submitted to Academic Board for noting. Outcomes: The unit satisfies the requirements of the Research aspect of the Investigate Category of the Monash Co-Curriculum Program, as follows: • Students will integrate knowledge and skills gained in university studies with industry-based research projects • Students will develop and apply personal attributes and generic skills relevant to scientific research • Students will develop skills and attributes required for effective teamwork on research projects • Students will augment, expand and contextualize discipline-related knowledge • Students will enhance and apply their scientific and/ or technical skills • Students will improve skills in communicating and reporting research project outcomes Figure 1: Preparation and Organization of Monash Science Faculty Co-Curriculum Program (INV1000)
