Think Green ! @ GKN Bonn For our environment - for our future TM Certification Powder metallurgy - a green technology 330 million precision components made of metal powder leave our company every year. They are mainly used in the car industry, built into shock-absorbers, seat adjustments and steering columns, amongst other things. With around 600 employees, we are today one of the largest industrial employers in Bonn. We are accutely aware of our responsibility to the region and the environment. Sustainability is an important issue for us, and a significant part of our corporate values. We are working continuously on new projects to enable our production processes to become more environmentally friendly and energy efficient. Our products help our customers to manufacture improved vehicles with lower CO2 emissions. We develop innovative products for sustainable technologies and undertake projects for renewable energy in our region. As a centre of innovation, we want to grow sustainably, demonstrating initiative and commitment. For our environment - for our future. 2 We offer: • efficient products with a long serviceable life •w eight reduced products •s olutions for avoiding secondary processes > ISO 14001 (Environmental management) > ISO 50001 (Energy management) Since 2004 we have been certified to ISO 14001. Every year we set ourselves ambitious targets, identify anomalies at an early stage and take the appropriate management steps. Since 2013 we have also been certified to ISO 50001. Our whole production sequence is optimised in terms of energy usage - and our employees are committed to this. •1 00% recycl able products We use: • l ight weight materials We pursue an active environmental and energy management We want to improve constantly • r ecycled metal powder Our aim: transparency • continuous improvement • international recognition • risk management • to uncover potential efficiency savings •e mployee motivation and qualification 3 Environmental projects EnergYmanagement 2015 Massive savings in compressed air through installation of servo motor-driven hydraulic units 2014 Expansion of our own nitrogen extraction facility to reduce transport of hazardous materials 2014 ThinkGREEN! initiative: Raising awareness amongst our employees 2010 Use of rainwater in cooling systems As a matter of principle: Energy: a valuable raw material • i ncreasing customer confidence • Climate protection • building confidence in ourselves in societ y and official bodies •d eveloping new markets 2010 Heating through waste heat recovery 2007 Modernisation of all heating installations 2004 Certification of waste disposal avoiding hazardous materials avoiding emissions consistent recycling certified waste disposal concept minimising the use of raw materials Lower energy consumption through continuous process optimisation • Independent OF fossil fuels as primary energy sources • Forward-looking and systematic coordination of the procurement and use of energY 25% increase in energy efficiency over the past 5 years Continuous improvement in energy efficiency Avoidance of idle times On-site production of technical gases Use of the most modern process technologies Systematic analysis of energy consumption through web-based metering preserving resources 4 5 Key performance indicators Top-Project Improvement of environmental balance sheet as a measurable success Development 2010-2015 0% primary energy sources used for heating (at external temperatures down to 0°C) Avoiding: 380 tonnes CO2/year Energy cy ef f icien +25% Savings of: 1.9 million kWh natural gas/year Water -13 % “Waste heat recovery” GKN in Bonn has six compressors which produce the compressed air required, and a further compressor for the works’ own nitrogen extraction. During this process, 93% of the required energy is converted to heat. Since 2010, the heat produced in this way has been recovered and used for heating purposes. Around 13,000 m2 of production and office space is today heated by this means. Annual savings in natural gas are sufficient to heat 120 family homes.
