MATHEMATICS
START HERE.
More than 70,000 futures
have started at Kirkwood...
Yours can be one of them!
Most people seldom realize nearly everything in our lives,
including the food we eat, the clothes we wear and the
various products we use every day, are in some way touched
by science, technology, engineering or mathematics. In the
STEM programs, as they’re called for short, you will learn to
observe, collect data, experiment, communicate your results,
then apply those skills to solve specific problems related to
science, economics, business and many other disciplines.
Kirkwood historically has been one of the only community
colleges in the nation to earn more than $1 million in
scholarship support from the National Science Foundation.
For more information call 319-398-5517 or www.kirkwood.edu/careers.
STEM Advisor
Kirkwood has many STEM-related opportunities. You can
start here in a STEM emphasis area, while at the same time
fulfilling your general education core requirements, then
transfer to a four-year school. Or, earn career-focused skills
and enter the workforce in just two years.
If you’re interested in transferring, check out Kirkwood’s
special STEM Advisor, at www.kirkwood.edu/stemadvisor.
This tool will help you find interest areas to study, as well as
transfer plans for the following institutions:
Clarke University
Coe College
Cornell College
Iowa State University
Mount Mercy University
Palmer College of Chiropractic
St. Ambrose (Occupational Therapy)
University of Iowa
University of Northern Iowa
Upper Iowa University
The number one question transfer students
ask is, “Will my credits transfer?”
Easy answers are available at TransferInIowa.org, a website
built by the three regents’ universities and Iowa’s community
colleges, to create a seamless transfer process for community
college students.
You will need a strong math and science background if you plan
to transfer into these challenging STEM fields. At Kirkwood, you
will find a wide variety of classes, world-class labs and instructors,
and personalized assistance to put you on the right track.
Biological Sciences Transfer
Research and study living organisms, including their
environments, their challenges and how to protect them.
Preprofessional Transfer
Prepare for the future! Get a strong start here in one of
Kirkwood’s many preprofessional areas, then transfer to work
on your bachelor’s, graduate and doctorate degrees. Some of
our preprofessional options include Chiropractic Medicine,
Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy,
Pharmacy, Physical Therapy and Veterinary Medicine.
Exercise Science
Kirkwood Community College’s Exercise Science program
will provide the training necessary to become a nationally
recognized fitness professional and/or to continue to an
institution offering bachelor’s degrees, or to further individual
knowledge in order to serve the local community. Students
within the exercise science program will attain skills in
assessment and identification of health risks and fitness
program design for general and special populations. Students
would also gain knowledge and understanding of physical and
physiological adaptations to the environment and exercise and
be able to utilize that knowledge to educate others regarding
proper exercise form, anatomy, physiology, and the nutrition
required to meet health goals.
Expected Department of Education approval: Spring 2015.
Chemistry Transfer
Rediscover the world in its most basic form - chemicals and
chemical processes. Learn to identify the substances that
compose matter, investigate their properties and how they
interact, then use these processes to form new substances.
Physics Transfer
Understand matter and energy, and how they interact. The
study of physics can include mechanics, heat, light, sound,
electricity, magnetism and the structure of atoms.
Computer Science Transfer
Explore the theory and foundations of computer technology.
Learn basic programming and the tools used in the
development of cutting edge computing solutions.
Engineering Transfer
There are a variety of engineering fields to explore, however,
all engineers help develop and design products by applying
principles of science and math.
Environmental Science/Geoscience Transfer
Study the millions of interactions between humans and the
world around them, both living and non-living, and how those
interactions impact one another.
Mathematics/Statistics Transfer
For thousands of years, mathematics has been part of humans’
quest to understand number, quantity and space. Reveal the
true power of numbers!
Biotechnology
2-year AAS degree (transfer degree and certificate options
available) | Potential careers: Lab technician, research
assistant
From designing plants that produce better crops to finding cures
to disease, biotechnology has made a mark on modern life. You
will learn to operate and maintain lab equipment, and adhere
to federal guidelines. Later in the program, you will prepare
solutions and reagents; explore microbiology, cell biology,
immunology, and genetic engineering and molecule biology;
isolate and characterize proteins; and perform chemical assays.
Computer Software Development
2-year AAS or AS degree | Potential Careers: Internet
programmer, systems analyst
Design, write, test and document computer programs using
languages such as Java, C++ and Visual Basic.NET. This
degree will transfer into a four-year Management Information
Systems program.
Computer Support Specialist
2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Computer support,
technical support
Provide technical assistance to users as well as maintain,
upgrade, and repair computer systems and networks. Students
interested in this field should have an interest in working with
people. Specialists constantly interact with customers and
fellow employees as they answer questions and give valuable
advice. They should also enjoy learning about new technology
and be willing to work on both hardware and software systems.
Good writing and communications skills are also required. This
degree focuses on a variety of IT skills that include hardware,
software, networking and programming, as well as problemsolving and analytical skills.
Network and System Administration
2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Network technician,
network administrator
